Sleeping Bears Lie

The statewide rumor mill is buzzing with reports that Lowell Weicker is considering an independent run for his old U.S. Senate seat next year against Democratic incumbent Joe Lieberman of New Haven (for now). Lieberman deposed former Sen. Weicker in 1988 with the help of his famous sleeping bear commercial—a commercial Weicker could now turn back on his old nemesis.
The rumors have been building since last week, when Weicker appeared at a public forum with radio talk-show host and Courant columnist Colin McEnroe. Weicker, a former liberal Republican who turned independent in 1990 when he left the Senate to run successfully for governor, dropped notice at the Sept. 20 forum that he’d consider another political run.
Weicker claimed he’s “99 percent” uninterested in running. But then he went on, and on, about how he wouldn’t sit by if “somebody pisses me off enough.” And he went on and on about how pissed off he is about the direction of the country.
His candidacy sounded like more than a 1 percent consideration in his mind. And it looked that way when his longtime political aide Tom D’Amore showed up at the gathering.
Weicker retired from public life in 1994. He’s 74. So it’s hard to imagine how serious he could be about running again. Perhaps like many out-to-pasture politicians he misses the attention and enjoys being talked about again.
If he does run, he’ll need the support of progressive Democrats to beat Lieberman, the way progressive Democrats catapulted him to the governor’s office in 1990. And statewide progressive Dems have been scouring the state for someone to challenge the conservative-leaning Lieberman. There already had been rumblings in the southern part of the state about Weicker possibly running. A Weicker candidacy would focus on the war in Iraq. Lieberman has been a leading supporter of that war from the outset.
If Weicker does run, he’ll at least have a chance for revenge on a sore point about that nasty 1988 race. Lieberman attacked Weicker then for missing votes in the Senate; he aired a TV commercial of a sleeping bear, an effective personal shot that ushered in a new era of nasty political campaigning in Connecticut. Lieberman’s point was that Weicker had become too cavalier about voting and doing his job after three terms in office.
Yet Lieberman ended up repeating that record in his third term as a U.S. senator. He spent much of 2003 running for president—and away from his job as senator. He skipped 54 percent of all Senate votes that year. He was absent for every vote on 63 of the 115 days in which the Senate cast votes. According to one estimate, that meant the taxpayers overpaid Lieberman $38,828.79 in salary that year.
The betting money here is that that issue wouldn’t get Weicker far in a race against Lieberman. Lieberman would indeed be vulnerable in a Democratic primary against a fresher face; it’s hard to imagine Weicker building on his old base to present too much of a threat. But depending on how a) bored and/or b) spiteful Lowell Weicker is these days, the sleeping bear could make for an entertaining bit of payback.

There wasn't one ounce of spite in Weicker at this forum. He said the 04 election was the one that upset him more than any other in his life, even more than his personal losses
Paraphrasing one of the things weicker said
The 04 results validated everything this administation had done in the past four years in the eyes of the world and thats a dangerous thing.
Lowell made it clear that if he ran he would do so as an Anti Iraq war candidate.

Please, anyone but Joseph Lieberman. As he's proved once again with his vote to confirm John Roberts (and his approval of Roberts even before any testimony was given), Joseph Lieberman does not represent Democrats, and is an embarassment to Connecticut, who could have a real progressive voice in the Senate.
I have been disappointed with the lack of drive in previous Democratic rivals. It seems that Lieberman's connections intimidate other Democrats, but is that how we want to be represented? It hardly seems democratic when we don't get a single primary challenger.

Let's encourage Weicker and anyone else willing to run who has a record of real accomplishment. As Irregular Jonathon says, that vote for Roberts proves Lieberman doesn't represent us!
Lowell not only accomplished much, but he was always a maverick Republican and was not afraid to leave that party behind to run on his own merit.
I'm obviously not a Democrat, but neither he nor Dodd, nor DeLauro for that matter, deserve to be representing us in Congress. I wouldn't encourage folks to vote any Republican (or even Green, from what I am reading about their Mayoral candidate) but we HAVE TO start voting for someone to force these entrenched incumbents out if we are ever to get governments that don't fail us all, as they did the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita victims.
And, Paul, I am really surprised at and disappointed in you for stooping to ageism! Bill Ball is 99 and he still threw a powerful punch at that young, ignorant fool in the White House for trying to mess with the Social Security system he had already come out of retirement to save once during that old, addled fool Reagan's term in office!
It's neither the party nor the age, but the qualities of the mind and heart and the vigors of the spirit and the health that matter.
Also, isn't there a way to make paragraph breaks possible in these comments or aren't we allowed to make some sense of what we write? (Feel free to edit out that last sentence.)
