A Lesson in Globalism

When a people in a developing country get more opportunity, they in turn demand more freedoms and opportunities. They push for reforms. That’s why we’re supposed to love globalization, according to its proponents — such as Yale University. Yale got a firsthand lesson in that theory Thursday when many of the Chinese graduate students welcomed on campus organized a protest — against Yale itself. Around 100 grad students held a rally and ran a petition drive against what they call discrimination at Yale against Chinese students. Yale denies that it’s discriminating. Said Professor Michael Denning: “It is clear that the central meaning of the global university is not the conferences on globalization but the tremendous growth of migrant intellectual labor, students and researchers crossing borders to do the work of the global university.” Click here to read his statement and the protest organizers’ press release.
