Armed Street Robberies Overnight

A clean-shaven man estimated to weigh 180 pounds mugged a couple at the corner of Chapel and Howe around 11:30 p.m. Monday. He took her purse and his wallet, which between them contained less than $10. He also took a cell phone. No one was hurt… Around the same time two masked men approached a man at Columbus and Union Avenue. One grabbed him; the other pointed a gun. They took a cell phone and an “undisclosed” amount of money (more than $10 this time)… A group of men committed an armed robbery at Grand Avenue and Lloyd Street in Fair Haven around 10:18 p.m. The police had no other details on that incident… Eight minutes later, a group of people — believed to be the same who committed the armed robbery — committed a carjacking on nearby Maltby Place. The car was found abandoned later on Monroe Street… The truly horrific crime of the evening took place hours earlier at a photo store at 59 Amity Rd. A short, heavy man in his 20s entered the store, produced a gun, pistol-whipped the female storeowner in a back room, kicked her and hit her with a metal stool. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated. The attacker escaped, according to police.
