Ethics, Anyone?

The state did it. Can New Haven, too, try to run a more ethical government? A new proposal went onto the Board of Aldermen’s agenda Monday that aims to do just that. The proposal — introduced by board President Jorge Perez — would update the city’s ethics code to reflect changes made in state ethics laws in the wake of the Rowland corruption scandal. Among Perez’s proposals: Banning government officials from shaking down contractors and employees for campaign contributions, something city budget chief Frank Altieri (pictured) made into an art form, among his other ethical lapses. Click here to read Perez’s proposal; add your reactions and suggestions at the end.
