Before Disaster Strikes

New Haven’s not waiting for a disaster to strike before finding out who needs the most help evacuating. On Tuesday the city sent forms to 2,500 households in the 06512 zip code area (Morris Cove) to develop a registry of information on elderly and disabled people who’ll need help fleeing town for, say, a hurricane. That area is the most vulnerable to a natural disaster; the city plans to mail forms to the rest of town this coming year. “One lesson of Katrina is that government must be proactive in order to protect our most vulnerable neighbors. We’re determined to do this,” said Mayor John DeStefano stated in a press release.
