Hurricane Katrina

The new majority leader of New Haven’s Board of Aldermen, Katrina Jones, is carrying on a trailblazing family tradition. Jones, elected to the post Tuesday night, is one of three aldermen whose parent served before her. Her mom, Gwen Newton (with her in the photo), represented the same ward in Newhallville from 1970 through 1973, one of an independent-minded elected group called the “Magnificent Seven” elected to shake things up. Jones is the first woman since her mom to represent the ward.
