The Voice of Living Black History

Listen as New Haven’s Ed Grant (shown here recently receiving a lifetime environmental justice award from the mayor) describes the black history he has lived through — and the black history he has made — for more than a half century.

Ed Grant is best known as the longtime driving force behind the Freddy Fixer environmental movement in the black community.

He also helped to organize groups like the Black Coalition and the Angry Young Black Men during the tumultuous 1960s, groups whose legacies loom large during Black History Month.

Grant sat down with Sarah Raymond to discuss his experiences in New Haven’s crucible of protest. The interview was conducted in conjunction with the New Haven Oral History Project. To listen to excerpts from that interview, click on the various segment titles below.
