D’Amore Lifts Lamont; Enviros Lift Joe

As he prepares to announce his candidacy Monday against U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman at a Hartford rally, Ned Lamont (in photo) is getting a behind-the-scenes boost from one of the state’s top maverick strategists. Tom D’Amore, who helped Lowell Weicker win the governor’s office as an independent, has signed on to the Lamont campaign as a paid consultant. His job is to toughen up Lamont as Lamont takes on Lieberman in a Democratic primary. Lamont is running to Lieberman’s left on issues like the war in Iraq, tax cuts for the rich, and health care. “I’m absolutely signed up,” D’Amore said Monday. Lamont campaign manager Tom Swan said D’Amore will be helping with plotting campaign strategy; he won’t be working on the paid media part of the campaign. Meanwhile, Lieberman (pictured below) has picked off the institutional support of a constituency to whom Lamont hopes to appeal: environmentalists. Click here for Melinda Tuhus’ report.
