It turns out that Robert Melvin, whom New Haven’s Democratic Town Committee elected as its assistant secretary Monday night, isn’t a registered New Haven voter, according to the Registrar of Voters Office. That means the town committee will have to elect someone else at its next meeting, said Town Chairwoman Susie Voigt. She said it was an honest mistake. “In good faith we asked him to run. We think he’s a great guy.” She said she will consult the state Central Committee to make sure what rules need to be followed.
