160 Lose Jobs; He Tried

Frank Camera.Frank Camera did his best. He came out of retirement last year to try to keep factory workers employed recycling newspaper at the century-old Simkins Industries plant on East Street despite devastating competition from China and downward pricing pressures from Wal-Mart. Sadly, the plant’s approximately 160 workers learned this week that the plant closes on Aug. 25. “We thought we were going to be pulling out of it,” Camera (pictured) said Friday. He said too many factors were working against a New Haven manufacturer in an old plant. “We’re paying $28,000 a day for oil here.”
