CO Redux

Not so fast, said Mayor John DeStefano Monday. In a rare veto, he said a new city law requiring carbon monoxide detectors inside buildings could be seen as breaching the domain of state building code, which is beyond the city’s jurisdiction. He sent the law back to aldermen for clarification. New wording passed at Monday’s Board of Aldermen meeting makes things clear: The city isn’t trying to tinker with building code; it wants to enforce a “health and safety issue.” Landlords don’t have to alter their buildings to protect tenants against the dangerous, odorless fumes. They can just buy plug-in CO monitors, which cost about $35 each. M.B.
