In Sengbe’s Footsteps

Sengbe Pieh (aka Cinque of the Amistad Affair) was New Haven’s first civil-rights hero. He was hardly the last. This Sunday First & Summerfield UMChurch and Amistad America honor some of today’s heroes in Sengbe’s name, as the church does each year. This year’s winners are three particularly beloved people in town: Lillie Perkins, who organizes the Unity Boys Choir; and Irmgard and Morris Wessel, a social worker and pediatrician who have spent decades taking care of families and working for social justice. The awards ceremony takes place at the church, at College and Elm streets, starting at 2 p.m. The choir will sing.
