Janitors Make Noise

Hundreds of janitors spilled onto the streets Thursday, after a booming rally inside the United Methodist Church at Elm and College streets to say, Look out, New Haven: We’re getting organized!

It was the first big public event for “Justice for Janitors” here in New Haven, where frustrated “trabajadores de limpieza” — almost all immigrants from Latin America — are joining with leaders from Service Employees International Union (SEIU), determined to form Local 32BJ.

Highlights were promises from State Sen. Toni Harp and State Rep. Toni Walker that they stand with the union-seeking sweepers. “It’s time for justice for janitors in New Haven!” said Harp, whose own mom’s janitor job got better with a union.

Aldermanic President Carl Goldfield cheered the janitors for having the courage to stand up for “what’s only fair.” “Every human being is entitled to a day off.”

SEIU District Supervisor Kurt Westby said he guessed New Haven would be a snap to organize compared to places like Stamford: here, elected officials are supportive. “They’ve seen what we can do!”

“And here in New Haven, you’ve got that ‘Sí se puede’ attitude!”

Were non-citizens like Juan (pictured) from Mexico nervous to be stepping into the limelight? Initially, yes. But his desperation for a higher wage drove him out there: he hasn’t seen his wife and kids in eight years. There was never any extra for the trip, even after working 15 hours a week as a janitor on top of his full time job. The strength of the organization also reassured him, he said. “We are here and we are strong and we’re going to come out ahead, triumphant.”
