Early Birds Get The Beach

Sleep in on a holiday? Not the Meade family. They wanted to grab this spot at Lighthouse Point Park.

Sunshine and warm weather lured New Haven residents to Lighthouse Point Park for Memorial Day Monday. While many enjoyed the beach and water park, most lounged on the lawn, barbecuing with family and friends.
Fighting for prime picnic tables, many arrived as early as 5:30 a.m. to reserve a spot. One such early bird, Eddie Pellot, chose his spot strategically so he could “see the kids by the sprinklers and playground and be near the bathroom.”
Their family’s sacrificial lambs, Raymond and Chaz Meade, came out at 6:30 a.m. to grab a spot in the shade, a tradition they have been carrying on for years. “Sometimes I spend nights in a car for this. I even have binoculars.” The mother, June Meade of Ferry Street, was enjoying the day off with her family. “Family— that’s what it’s all about. We had to find sometime to get everyone together,” Raymond said.
The Howard, Givan, Earl, and Ritchie families relaxed and kept cool under the pavillion. An honoree of Memorial Day, Earl Givan, veteran of Operation Desert Storm (Part I), was feasting with his family while reflecting on the intended spirit of the day. His mother-in-law, Valerie Howard, was barbecuing for those who could not. “We’re out here to remember the troops overseas.”
“Everyday should be Memorial Day,” Benito Rivera said happily as he grilled up a storm for family and friends.
For the shorter crowd, the fun and sun were just too much, leaving tuckered out children catnapping wherever they dropped.
