City Hall’s Credibility Cracks

A crisis of confidence brews over the Register’s disclosure that City Hall censored a supposedly “independent” taxpayer-funded consultant’s report of its troubled legal office. Aldermen including Jorge Perez discovered that officials had the consultant remove a recommendation from its report that the mayor fire the office’s top lawyer. “How much confidence can we have in anything they give us now if we have to ask, ‘Did you specifically alter it?’” Perez said Wednesday. Surprisingly, as the Reg’s Angela Carter and Andy Bromage report Thursday, the mayor defends the action.
