The country’s most closely watched and momentous U.S. Senate primary — taking place right here, between Democrats Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont — enters its final full week before the Aug. 8 election. Latest highlights:
• The New York Times endorses Lamont, the Courant, Lieberman. Note: The Courant endorsed the reelections of Gov. John Rowland and President Bush; the Times endorsed their Democratic opponents.
• A top pro-Lieberman Democrat, who’s Irish-American, scolds Jewish voters for abandoning Lieberman, says they should vote for him based on religion. Click here to read more.
• The big guns come out: a flock of senators, include Delaware’s Joe Biden, are in the state to ride on the Lieberman bus tour, while U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters is helping Lamont barnstorm black city neighborhoods. Both Lamont (in picture above) and Lieberman made it to New Haven’s Green Saturday night to work the huge crowd at the Temptations concert.
• Lieberman’s cavortings with right-wingers in the Terry Schiavo case come back to haunt him. Click here for Christine Stuart’s account.
• Willington’s Democratic Town Committee becomes the latest to pass a resolution calling on Lieberman either to ditch plans to run as an independent in the fall, or drop out of the Democratic primary. Click here for more from Christine Stuart.
• The Universal Health Care Foundation applauds Lamont’s universal health care plan. Click here for the release.
• Lieberman — who’s petitioning his way onto the November ballot — turned down a Green Party worker who asked him to sign a petition to give other third-party candidates the same chance. Click here to read the Green’s account on his web site.
