Not So Fast

At 1 a.m. Saturday, a man getting out of his parked car near 101 Hazel St. was robbed at gunpoint of his watch, bracelet and wallet.
Friday at 11 p.m., a pizza delivery man was delivering chicken wings in the area of 25 Springside Ave. in the West Rock area near Southern Connecticut State University. He was robbed at gunpoint of money, a cell phone and his chicken wings.
Friday at 9:23 p.m., Yale graduate students in the area of 182 Mansfield St. were held up by a man in a mask with a gun, according to Police Spokeswoman Bonnie Winchester. Someone called police during the robbery. When police arrived, four Yale graduate school students, some from the Yale Divinity School, had detained the perpetrator in a back yard. One of the students was shot in the abdomen during the scuffle. Police found a mask and gun and arrested the would-be mugger.
Here’s what Yale Police Chief James Perrotti said in response in an email:
To Graduate and Professional Students:
I am writing to let you know of an attempted robbery and shooting last night
involving four graduate and professional students in the yard of a house
located at Mansfield and Tilton Streets. The students were approached by a man
wearing a mask with a handgun who demanded money. In the ensuing struggle, the
gun was fired and one of the students was injured. He is recuperating in the
hospital. Yale and New Haven police have arrested the man, and he is now in
the custody of the New Haven police.
While this incident is not part of a pattern of crime, it is most serious, and I
urge those of you in New Haven this summer to exercise caution. Call us
immediately if you feel unsafe or see anything or anyone that is suspicious, by
dialing 911 or 203-432-4400. You may wish to program these numbers in your cell
phones.
Sincerely,
Chief James Perrotti
