Play Lettuce!

The matron saint of downtown New Haven, Alderwoman Frances “Bitsie” Clark (top photo), threw out the first head of lettuce at 1 p.m. Wednesday to inaugurate this season’s CitySeed Farmers Market on Church Street in front of City Hall. Area farmers will sell their organic produce there every Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. (Click here and here for Business New Haven’s coverage of the hilarious reason the market wasn’t allowed on the Green — but pizza sellers are.) By 2 p.m., MaryAnn Borellli sold all five heads of iceberg lettuce she brought from her North Haven farm, including the one Clark tossed.

The green is well-served by those five people that have kept business out. It is a magnificent public space that is the centerpiece of downtown New Haven, If it's such a good idea to have a public marketplace, perhaps the city should allocate new space for the endeavor.

As for CitySeed, so far this year it appears not to be a traditional farmer's market at all, but rather a high-end organic sales pitch at prices the average consumer would be wise to avoid. It's like a cake with too much frosting in the current incarnation; frosting is nice, but you need mostly cake to place it upon.
