ARRESTS MADE IN RECENT ROBBERIES

NEW HAVEN — Two young men have been arrested in connection with a street robbery that took place on Monday, 21 August, in the area of 386 Prospect Street. Also, last night, in two related incidents that occurred in Fair Haven, police have made three arrests.

At about 8 p.m. Monday evening, a man and woman were robbed at gunpoint by two males who were last seen walking south on Prospect Street. The men were later located in the area by Yale police officers and were arrested on an unrelated charge. Officers continued to investigate and the two were subsequently charged in the robbery. Nathan Quaye, 19, of 123 Judson Street, was charged with robbery in the first degree, larceny in the second degree and conspiracy on both charges. Marvin Gore, 20, of 1285 Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery in the first degree and conspiracy to commit larceny in the second degree. Police seized a black replica Pietro Beretta 9 mm BB gun.

Sergeant Kevin Costin of the department’s Robbery/Burglary Unit praised Officer Jeffrey Fletcher and Officer Manuella Vensel for their work on this case and added that the investigation is continuing.

Last night, two men were robbed in two incidents in Fair Haven around 8 p.m. Marc Gross, 28, of New Haven, was robbed in the area of Peck and Maltby streets while he was riding his bicycle. He was shot with a BB gun several times and reported that the men left the area in a gold vehicle. Moments later, Jose Velez, 32, of West Haven, was robbed by two subjects in the area of Clinton Avenue and Chatham Street. Velez also reported seeing weapons and a gold vehicle. At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers Elvin Rivera and Jose Miranda, assigned to the department’s Information Drive Neighborhood Enforcement Team (ID-NET) located the gold vehicle at Chapel and Ferry streets. Along with officers from Patrol, the ID-NET officers stopped the vehicle at Lloyd and Exchange streets, made three apprehensions, and recovered two BB guns and some stolen property. A 17-year-old male from New Haven was arrested and charged with robbery in the first degree, larceny in the second degree, assault in the third degree, conspiracy to commit robbery in the first degree and conspiracy to commit larceny in the second degree. A 16-year-old male from New Haven was arrested and charged with robbery in the first degree, larceny in the second degree, conspiracy to commit robbery in the first degree and conspiracy to commit larceny in the second degree. A 16-year-old male from New York was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery in the first degree.

“This job was a great collaboration between officers in Patrol and ID-NET along with detectives in the Robbery/Burglary Unit,” said Sergeant Costin. “In a matter of minutes, we were able to take three dangerous young men off the streets of New Haven.”

Once again the public relations people that work for our techno loving Chief Ortiz has claimed another success for IDNET.

The IDNET is not community policing. It is another gimmick that appeals and appeases people who like to see the cops cracking heads. It is not, not community policing. Come on Chief, do you really think this enforcement model of policing is as effective as community policing? Ask your officers, not your special hand selected unit. Oh I forgot, you do not ask them their opinion.

Saturating an area of the city with 18 patrols should damn well find and arrest a couple of thugs (dumb ones). But what happens when the special hand selected police unit of Ortiz moves to another area of the city? The streets of Fair Haven revert to the smarter thugs, who laid low. Come on Chief.

TSM, if you have a concern about community policing you should remember that the Mayor supported Chief Ortiz when he clashed with then Assistant Chief Bryan Norwood. Forcing Norwood to go elsewhere because there was not enough room for him in New Haven. Now look what he is doing in Bridgeport. You should bring that up at the next Mayor's night.
