The Real New Haven of the Midwest

Andy Horowitz (he runs the New Haven Oral History Project) had just returned from a 10,000-mile, 27-state road trip around the U.S. when he read the Independent’s story about the alleged “New Haven of the Midwest.” Horowitz’s travels took him through the real New Haven of the Midwest, a sleepy town in northeastern Iowa. He brought back these photos and this report.

” I walked up and down County Highway A46, the one road that goes through town, in the hopes of meeting somebody and comparing notes on our different New Haven experiences, but there was nobody around. New Haven is in northeast Iowa, not far from the Minnesota border, in Mitchell County — the county is roughly 470 square miles and boasts nearly 11,000 residents. I’d venture the guess that around 20 of them live in New Haven proper. According to one website I found , there are also New Havens in Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Yay Andy! New Haven, Kentucky is slightly more populous in the town proper than New Haven, Iowa, and people are there to meet. The Kentucky New Haven was home to a "New Haven Pizza" and it was possible, last time I was there, to take the train (courtesy of the Kentucky Railway Museum) from New Haven to the next town on the line, Boston, Kentucky.
