Lamont: Schlesinger’s Mexican Fears “Absolutely Nuts”

by Paul Bass | October 23, 2006 10:23 PM | | Comments (3)

Are Mexican immigrants a threat to national security? More of a danger than people like, say, Timothy McVeigh or Mohammed Atta?

You’d think so listening to Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Schlesinger at his debate Monday night with the other two men running for Connecticut’s open seat. Said Schlesinger: “”When you talk about terrorism in our homeland, illegal immigration is the spearhead of that,” he said. “Joe [Lieberman] wants to give them amnesty. Ned [Lamont] wants to give them scholarships. I want to give them the boot… That is where our main threat is coming. It’s coming from Mexico. People can come through with a dirty bomb…” (Click here to read the full story on the debate.)

After the debate, Schlesinger was asked to identify a single instance of Mexican immigrants’ being involved in terrorism. The other two candidates were asked to respond to Schlesinger’s claim.

Click on the start arrow to hear Lamont’s response, in which he called Schlesinger’s argument “absolutely nuts.”

Lieberman didn’t go quite that far, but made clear that threats he sees to the homeland come from directions other than south. Click on the start arrow to listen.

Meanwhile, Schlesinger, unable to identify a single instance involving Mexicans, tried to amend his debate comments by throwing Canada into the mix. Click on the start arrow to listen.

The threat to national security is more from the uncontrolled border than the illegal immigrant that risk their own lives sneaking across. The basic point is that if huge numbers of people can sneak across the border, what's to stop other Bad People (e.g. terrorists with biological or worst weapons) from using the same entryways.

Illegal immigration is a disaster for other reasons than national security. It's a lose-lose proposition for both the immigrants (no legal protection from evil employers and landlords) and the places they settle to work (language barriers, drain on government services, etc.)

Paul, Is your view that Schlesinger was really that far off base with his concern about the border? I was at the debate as well and thought that he made a very valid point. I don't recall that he said anything about "Mexicans". He talked about the Mexican border. If he had pointed out that Mohammad Atta had entered the U.S. through the Canadian border, would you have accused him of saying that Canadians were the terrorist threat? The bias imbedded in your questioning gives the liberal press the reputation it presently enjoys. Stephanopolos was out of line as well, stopping Schlesinger, (or is it "Alan Gold"?) in mid-sentence. George never interrupted Lieberman or Lamont during their meandering responses to the press' questions. Fairness and objectivity in reporting result in credibility.

Paul,
What gives? Once again you're publication isn't reporting accurately. On your header "Today's Great Debates" you state "Some readers finds reason to support Alan Schlesinger's linking terrorism to Mexican immigration" Please re-read the readers comments and ask yourself, is that really what NFJANNETTE and JEFF are saying? After distorting what Schlesinger said, you now are distorting the views of your loyal readers.
