A Flood of New Cops Promised

Mayor DeStefano’s asking the Board of Aldermen to approve an extra $1 million to hire new cops and civilian workers at the NHPD. Over the next two years, he wants to expand the police force by 20 percent, from 407 to 490 sworn members, making it the largest in the state. New hires would enable the city to restore walking beats and bike cops, as well as start getting basic paperwork done, like reporting crime stats to the feds the same time other cities do. DeStefano (pictured) plans to talk about all this, and new crime-fighting strategies, at a press conference Thursday morning.
