Bigelow Rescued

Thirteen hours after an expired deadline, the city bought the old Bigelow Boiler building at 198 River St. Thursday and saved it from extinction. The city paid $470,000 and has up to $100,000 at its disposal to “stabilize the building” by addressing missing bricks and windows and portions of the roof, according to City Economic Development Officer Helen Rosenberg. Then it hopes to resell the building to someone to renovate it and turn it into some mix of offices, studios, and/or light industrial space as part of the River Street redevelopment project in Fair Haven. A hold-up in the release of state bond money for the sale delayed the purchase past a midnight deadline, endangering the deal, but the seller agreed to extend the deadline to pave the way for Thursday’s 1 p.m. closing.
