Gay Marriage Foes Go For Joe

A group of New Haven Latino clergy known for virulently opposing gay rights measures threw their support behind U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s reelection campaign Thursday in a speech that focused on family values and faith.
The group said the senator’s opposition to gay marriage contributed to their endorsing him: “We will not support a candidate that will go against the values of the traditional family as we know it and the Bible teaches us.”
Lieberman picked up the endorsement five days before Tuesday’s election, when he faces off against Democrat Ned Lamont for his Senate seat.
A crowd of 25 clergy from 12 different cities gathered on the steps of Fair Haven’s Second Star of Jacob Christian Church Thursday to voice their endorsement of Lieberman, who’s making a third-party bid for reelection after losing the Democratic primary to Lamont.
The event was a match between two parties with histories of visible opposition to gay rights causes. The ministers organized a vocal crowd to denounce a proposal to establish a New Haven “domestic registry” for gay couples in committed relationships, for instance, denouncing homosexuality as a sin in an hours-long public hearing. Lieberman voted for a measure proposed by Republican then-Sen. Jesse Helms (Senate Amendment no. 2434 to bill number 1513) to deny federal funding to schools that counsel students, even suicidal gay students, that it’s OK to be gay.
In a written statement, clergy stressed the need for candidates who “value and respect the principles of the church as a community of faith.
“We will not support a candidate that will go against the values of the traditional family as we know it and the Bible teaches us. This is why, as pastors and leaders that guide our people, we want to publicly support the reelection of Senator Joe Lieberman for the senate,” said minister Abraham Hernandez (pictured at right), reading from the statement.
In a short speech, Lieberman stressed the importance of faith and said he supported funding faith-based initiatives.
After the speech, a reporter asked what issues, including gay marriage, contributed to the endorsement.
“We’re just not supporting Sen. Lieberman based on one issue,” responded Hernandez. “The caliber and character of his integrity is what really draws us to say he is the best candidate.”
To what extent the group’s endorsement was based on Lieberman’s stand on gay marriage?
“I wouldn’t say it was the major reason. It was important. It helped us make our decision,” said Hernandez.
The Lamont campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this article.
Also Thursday, the Reg published this article by Mary O’Leary taking a closer look at the Lieberman campaign’s $387,000 in unexplained petty cash.

How nice to see the bigots aren't sitting this one out. Heaven forbid we'd have an election without some hate and intolerance injected.

As someone very interested in this race from out of state can you explain how both the gay rights groups and anti-gay groups both endorsed slush fund Joe??
Are people in connecticut really that stupid?

Funny how every religious denomination has cornered the market on "values." When do we start the stoning and smiting? I wonder how many latent homosexuals are in this group of Latino clergy? Normal heterosexual men don't obsess on gay sex, they think about women (usually how to oppress them). It's disturbing to me, to see that these crazy guys are taken seriously. I suppose we're lucky they're not Aztecs, otherwise we'd have the traditional blood sacrifice protection amendment - it's okay, god told me to rip your heart out, it says so in this codex...

I wonder how these pastors will minister to the mothers of dead soldiers, killed jusr so we don't cut & run or what explanantion they will give their undocumented congregants when there ia an epidemic of measles or chicken pox among their newborns because the Bush administration won't provide them Medicaid benefits. How ironic to come to the 1st world for a better life for your children & they die from 3rd world diseases because their ministers think it is more important that gays not marry than babies get vacines. I wonder which is the real sin. & lastly, Leiberman has no jurisdiction over marriage of any sort since it is a state issue.
Shame on them for abandoning the real needs to their communities: housing, health, education.

Most endorsements don't mean a thing -- but this one actually says a lot about Joe Lieberman and the constituency he represents.

This is the same Joe Lieberman that the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign endorsed even though Ned Lamont is much more gay positive.
HRC is a corrupt organization that takes millions of dollars from gay people but is up to its eyeballs in the anti-gay establishment.
Any gay person who gives money to them is a fool.

Yes, it's interesting. They're defending a part of the Bible where they claim is against homosexuality. What they miss are the admonisments against shellfish, clothing made up of different fabrics, etc. The same Bible slaveowners used to justify their actions is the same Bible those very slaves used to gain their freedom!
It's OK to back a candidate who backs a presidency that used lies to invade another country!
UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I can't believe that this candidate is the same one who was picked for and running on the Dems ticket 6 yrs ago!

What do you expect from folks who believe in preposterous hocus-pocus.
Several thousand years of belief. Not a single shred of credible evidence.

TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE???
I could not get married in the catholic church because my selected partner was --A LUTHERAN.
My niece could not get married in the catolic church because her selected mate was--A DIVORCEE.
my sister in law was refused the service from her pastor because of MIXED RACE
all three were proposed unions between a A MAN AND A WOMAN . I HAVE BEEN MARRIED TO MY WIFE FOR THIRTY ONE YEARS , MY SISTER IN LAW MARRIED TO HER HUSBAND FOR TWENTY EIGHT AND MY NIECE IS GOING ON TEN.
RELIGIONS HAVE CONCOCTED SILLY MARRIAGE RULES a long time ago . The gay restriction is just another in the line. The first three make a mokery of the current sanctimonious stance of -between aman and a woman.
PRINCIPLES ONCE AGAIN THE LAST REFUGE OF THE SCOUNDRELS.

Hey, how can they get involved in partisian politics without risking their tax exempt status?
Geeze, the Catholics open up their mouths about the immorality of the war in Iraq, and people call for an IRS investigation, threatening to remove their tax exempt status. These evangical ministers boldly endorce Joe Lieberman days before the election....and there is no call for an investigation by the IRS?
Criticize unjust laws and government policies, fine. Educate your congregants about your Biblical perspective and theology(as warped as they might be), but NEVER NEVER NEVER ENDORCE A CANDIDATE OR A PARTICULAR PARTY. Guess you did not read the IRS CODE on partisian political involvment by tax exempt institutions. Oh perhaps ministers, you are so assured of God's Blessings, you feel you dont need to be tax exempt anymore? Perhaps ministers, you feel that God will provide you the extra money you will pay for the property you own in the church's name, like the land, your homes(that i believe the IRS calls parsonages), your cars(oh yea, you think we dont know about those too), buses, and the like. OUTRAGEOUS.
THEY SHOULD LOSE THEIR TAX EXEMPT STATUS. To whom do I send my complaint? Will I be the only one calling for an investigation? There is a double standard here which I think is just absolutly ridculous.

I'm a bit confused.
If I'm not mistaken, just a couple years ago, Lieberman was a Guest Speaker at a National Human Rights Campain (HRC) fundraising dinner. One of the major goals of the HRC is giving gay couples the same rights as straight couples to get married.
Guess he's so desperate for someone to support him he's telling any group what they want to hear. Oh well, I guess that's what they all do.

i think it's funny how wishy washy you people have become. I don't doubt that many, if not all of you, supported the war in Iraq at least in the beginning. Have you thought about the huge amount of danger we would be in if the troops were pulled out? God is a just God, and if you remember correctly, there were many wars in the bible. why don't u get your facts straight?
