The Word Was “Brotherhood”
by Tom Ficklin | November 20, 2006 11:06 AM | Permalink | Comments (1)
This past weekend saw a Gospel Fest “Brotherhood Summit” in the black community, with community leaders tackling issues ranging from the plight of ex-felons to fatherhood and building black business. If you missed it — or even if you didn’t — you can watch highlights by pressing the play arrow below the following videos. The highlights include talks by Bishop Charles Brewer, Rev. Samuel Ross Lee, Minister Donald Morris, and Apostle Eugene Brunson of Wayfarer Ministries; poetry readings by Terence Lee and Frank Brady;and singing by the CIty-Wide Male Chorus. The events took place at Trinity Temple on Friday night and Bethel AME’s Community Outreach Center on Saturday.

Tom Ficklyn did a poor job of reporting on the events of the "Brotherhood Summit". He made it appear that the meeting consisted of a goup of preachers with a lot of amens and his photos showed like-wise. However, the two most dynamic speakers were Superintendent of Schools R. Mayo and State Senator Dyson. Mr.Mayo spoke on excerpts from a document on "Super Predators" written by John J. Dilulio back in November 27, 1995. His messge was that the schools are not educating our children, but one would have to read the document by Professor Dilulio to get the full impact of Mr. Mayo speech. Then right behind that, Mr. Dyson spoke on the fact that parents are not partenting, and we need to get back to family values and the principles of the church. The all city male choir was very inspirational. It seemed as though it was about fifty of them and they came struting down the aisle signing in three part harmony and as a musician, I really appreciated them and also the choir director , because it is no easy task to get that many men together on a Friday night.
