They’re Champs

In a “game worthy of ESPN,” New Haven’s Steelers — the football team of local 12 to 16-year-olds — won the Pop Warner Super Bowl Tournament in Rhode Island thanks to a 30-yard pass in the last 21 seconds. Local cop and community youth organizer Shafiq Abdussabur was there and sent back both this written account of the game and the photos that follow.

The team needs to raise $34,000 to attend the national “Super Bowl Play Down” in Florida; some of their families have trouble coming up with the dough. Send contributions to Pop Warner Midgets, c/o Melvin Wells, 181 Tanglewood Drive Hamden, CT 06518.
