Man Dies Fleeing Cops

A man with a criminal record and a loaded gun in the car died in a car crash as he sped away from traffic cops Saturday at 10:25 p.m., according to police. When DUI enforcement cops tried to pull him over, the driver allegedly sped away, running a red light and crashing into a vehicle at Church Street South and Union Avenue. The driver, 22 year-old Melvin Ledbetter, eventually died of injuries sustained during the crash. His passenger, a 23 year-old city man, was arrested for gun possession. He and the driver of the other car were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Police have arrested two city men, aged 21 and 23, in connection to the murder of Aaron McCrae at the Church Street South housing complex in September. Both were charged with murder.

The Adas Israel Cemetery on Jewell Street called police Sunday reporting that seven gravestones had been toppled.

Sunday night at about 9 p.m., a 22 year-old West Haven man was shot in the back as he rode his bicycle through New Haven. He told police he almost hit a pedestrian with his bike, causing the enraged pedestrian to shoot.

Robberies:

Two people reported being robbed Friday night, one on Pine and Bright Streets in Fair Haven.

Saturday at 2:03 a.m. someone was robbed at gunpoint in front of Gourmet Heaven on Audubon Street.

At Howard & 2nd Avenues Saturday night, a victim was robbed by group of men with a knife.

Sunday at 7:28pm, a husband and wife were followed inside an apartment building at 1476 Chapel Street by a man with a gun who robbed them.

A Wolcott Street resident told police five men broke into the house, beat and robbed her 14 year-old son, and stabbed a tenant in the leg during a robbery at 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

A man leaving his car at Clinton Avenue and Dover Street at 10:10 p.m. Sunday was forced to remove his a/v equipment at gunpoint.

And a man told police he was entering 225 English St. at 12:11 a.m. when he was robbed by three men who hit him with a golf club and baseball bat and took his car.
