Sergio Rodriguez (caught in this photo at the annual Empower New Haven luncheon at the Lawn Club), the new head of the Board of Aldermen’s Finance Committee, has an idea for helping distressed cities. He wants the state legislature to approve a five-year rise in the state sales tax from 6 to 6.5 percent to help distressed cities. Rodriguez said he has begun organizing meetings with his local counterparts in Bridgeport, Hartford, New London, Meriden, and Waterbury to build support for his idea.
