Alderman King Behind Bars
by Melissa Bailey | January 2, 2007 10:08 PM | Permalink | Comments (16)
As his colleagues met in aldermanic chambers Tuesday night, Dixwell Alderman Drew King sat behind bars at the Whalley Avenue jail “” the third alderman to face criminal charges in four months. Following an initial arrest before Christmas for allegedly assaulting a woman at the sober house he runs, King was rearrested over the weekend, charged with violating a protective order.
King was originally arrested Dec. 22 for allegedly choking a patron at his sober house during a dispute that reportedly arose over a piece of sausage he’d grabbed from a woman’s plate. King appeared in court on charges of third-degree assault, unlawful restraint and disorderly conduct, and was released on the condition he not approach the woman again, according to a corrections officer.
Over the weekend, King was rearrested, twice, when he allegedly broke that protective order by contacting the woman again. When he appeared in court a second time, he was not released “” with bail set at $25,000, he returned to the custody of the New Haven Correctional Facility on Whalley Avenue, according to officials.
King’s colleagues Monday responded with concern for the well-being of the alderman, who has struggled with addiction in the past.
“Drew would seem to have some personal issues he needs to pay attention to,” responded Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “I haven’t asked for him to resign” at this point, said the mayor late Tuesday.
“Everybody’s very concerned about Drew’s well-being,” said Board of Aldermen President Carl Goldfield. “He was arrested, he ran into some trouble again and he was arrested again.” Goldfield said he spoke to King a week ago Saturday, between the times of his two arrests. Then “it seemed to fall apart again” for King, said Goldfield.
Goldfield said the alderman, who chairs the Public Safety Committee and the Committee of the Whole that is tackling the youth curfew, would be taking a break. “I think he’s going to be absent for a little while,” said Goldfield, but “resignation would be way, way premature.”
Phone calls to the King household were not returned Tuesday. (Click here to read more details about his arrests in a Register article.)
King is the third member of the city’s legislative body to to face criminal charges in four months “” in September, Beaver Hill Alderwoman Babz Rawls-Ivy pleaded guilty to stealing about $50,000 in federal funds. And Yale Alderman Nick Shalek was arrested in August and charged with breach of peace, criminal trespassing and interfering with an officer for getting into a fight outside a downtown saloon.
All three arrestees belong to the aldermanic Goldfield camp, running on a clean-government platform.
What does the trio of arrests this year say about the legislative board? Goldfield said aldermen fall prey to the same human vulnerabilities as everybody else. “We’re not a unique group.”

Calling Jerry Springe: "King’s colleagues Monday responded with concern for the well-being of the alderman." Forget about the choked woman who's sausage was stolen - I guess it's her own fault for not being a vegetarian and for not having a thicker neck?
“We’re not a unique group. yes, unfortunately all too common.

New Haveners should be aware that an arrest in New Haven can be based on nothing other than an accusation from one person with no witnesses and no other evidence. This is not the case everywhere, but it is here.
It is therefore more likely under some of Connecticut laws, and due to policy and practice here that an innocent person will be arrested.
In light of this, Connecticut residents in particular should be scrupulous in adhering to the principle that one is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
In this case reports are that an officer himself witnessed the defendant's violation of a protective order. This is quite provocative and far more substantial than the bare bones scenario outlined above, but overall, New Haveners are far too unaware of the tenure of accusations here, how lacking in probable cause they can be. The average person would be surprised to learn this.

Maybe not a "unique group," but disproportionally in trouble with the law. Were 10 percent of YOUR friends arrested in the past year?

I'm tired of seeing Shalek's name mentioned without noting that all charges were dropped. It's irresponsible journalism.

Isn't this the same alderman that kept changing the way he would vote for BOA president? how did Johnny get Mr. King to Vot against Perez? I know. I was there and it was promises. Now watch how this slips away. Goldfield is a good man, no doubt. But we in New Haven are NOT represented by honest people, except for a few. Please people vote. get John out, and get real representatives in, nt just people that can bring in votes with false promises, and then lead a life of disgrace. Chen wants cells phones. DePino supported the sale of an of city owned land to a person that illegally built on it. Instead of getting what the city had into it some $30,000. No one bid at auction and then they sold it for less than $10,000. They could have just leased it to the person that encroached on it. Why the special deal for her neighbor? Does Babz Rawls-Ivy ring a bell? She was convicted of stealing money. Why have all developers in support of the Mayor now not paying taxes, how did they all get deferrals? Why did the finance committee forgive over $60,000 in taxes to a multi-million dollars drug company? This city needs new leadership. It also needs a few reorters that look at things. It's all in the public record, but at every BOA meeting the room is vacant except for a few of us. Let's see a review of aldermanic decisions in 2006 published. Heck the wonderful calendar have wrong department phone numbers, and 6,000 new businesses in downtown. I don't think so. Where did that number come from. It should be easy to find out since all businesses must file.

This Is Why We Should Push For Term limits for all
Of These Idiot Servants!!!!
Posted by: pinkbicycle | January 5, 2007 12:24 AM
Sounds like Wait a Second and Three Fifths ought to get on a ticket and run for office! Wait a second you are lumping way too many things--first of all Rawls Ivy stole from the housing Authority--2-3 years before getting elected--check that out. I hear Jorge Perez is a nasty guy who wants to ascend to the mayors office instead of running for the mayor's office. perhaps your the leader the city is looking for. Get off your butts and do something. Oh yeah its easy to rant and whine on line--I know, I am here with you. Neither of us has any guts or courage. On to the next rant!

I would like to think that most of the people that post here are the people that do things. That's why we are here to keep in touch and inform our communities of thing that are happening and maybe to share our views and problems with others that share this city. I Have not heard from people in his district stand up for him yet I have not heard people
say that he has made an great improvments in recent times.

Pinkbicycle Buy The Way I Have Run For Office As A
Independent. But Due To The Fact That Money And
Corruption Rule Politics Independent Do Not Have
A Chance!! As Far As Get Off Our Butts, I say The
Mass Should Get Off There Ass.So What I Plan On Doing Is To Fight To Get Term Limts And Referendum
Studies Have Proven That The Longer Politician Are
In Office The More They Are Open to Graft and
Corruption!! So I Would Hope That You Would Get Off Your Butt And Help to Empty Out What I Call
Are Brothel House Of Political Prostitute!!!

Term limits won't stop people from voting in crackheads in the first place.

Term Limits May Not Stop People From Voting In Crackheads As You Have Stated Edward_H, But What
Term Limits Do Is Keep These Political Pirates From Holding A Monopoly. This Is Why In New York City From The Mayor To The City Council They are
Limit To Two Terms. Just Like The President Of The
United States. And Speaking Of Voting How Come This State Doesnot Have Referendum Voting Beacuse
If It Did I Bet The People Would Vote In Term Limits!!. Also I would Also Like To See Proportinal Representation Which Would do Away With The Monopoly Of The Two Major Political Parties. P.S.Edward_H You Also Forgot People Who
Vote In Alcoholics And I Do Not Have To Call Names
Because You Know Who I Am Talking About!!

These Adlers are unbelievable. If 10% of the Board of Trustees for Yale-New Haven hospital had been arrested you can guarantee the entire board of Alders would be up in arms calling for investigations left and right and crying that "something has to be done".

After Mayor Lee Left Office and Retired, It Seems Like The City of New Haven Lost It's Integrity of Government. If The City of New Haven Would Comply With State and Federal Law and Do Police Background Checks, State Police Background Checks, F.B.I. Background Check, NCIC Background Checks, Credit Checks, Maybe, Psycological and Drug Testing On ALL Appointed, Selected, Employees and Voted In Officials Prior To Them Taking Office, We Would NOT! Have These Problems With "Borderline" People. Some of These "City Personnel" Were "Anti-Vietnam War Activist", "Draft Dodgers" and "Communists" and Gave Me Grief When I Got Out The Army In 1974. Many of These People Have Had FREE! Loans and Grants From The City and Never Paid The Money Back, Have Bad Credit, Owe Money On Their Student Financial Aid, Have Criminal Records, Deadbeat Dads, Own The City Money On Property Taxes, Automobile Taxes, Parking Tickets, Involved Was Other City Scandels: CETA, 9th Square and The Rehab Scam. The City of New Haven Will NOT! Even Comply With The U.S. Civil Service Rules, Laws and Regulations...Will NOT! Give "Vietnam Veterans" Their 10 point Preference On City Jobs...They Never Gave Me Mine As A "Constable" or "Teachers Aid".
