Borgstrom To Be Grilled By End of Month

The Yale-New Haven Hospital and its blue-collar employees spent the holidays in a labor standstill, but Aldermanic President Carl Goldfield plans to get things moving — he announced that his proposed grilling of President/CEO Marna Borgstrom will be scheduled before the end of the month.
In the wake of an arbitrator’s ruling that the hospital had broken federal law by intimidating its 1,800 blue-collar workers who are trying to form a union, and amid feelings the community had been “betrayed” by hospital administration, Goldfield last month proposed a public hearing to ask YNHH higher-ups about breaches of the agreed-upon labor process.
Now Goldfield says he isn’t waiting for aldermen to vote on his unusual resolution — he’s going to get down to the grilling, calling a pubic hearing before the month’s end. Invitees include: Borgstrom and the hospital board.
“I want to hear what the hospital did, and why they did it,” said Goldfield Tuesday.
The public hearing will occur at a special Community Development Committee meeting, said Goldfield. That committee’s head, East Rock Alderman Ed Mattison, is also ready for some answers. Mattison said he feels the need to respond to full-page hospital ads, which indicated the use of anti-union captive audience meetings was an isolated event conducted by rogue employees. “What discipline did [the hospital] take if they were rogue employees?” asked Mattison.
YNHH Spokesman Vin Petrini said he wanted to hear more specifics on what the hearing would entail before commenting as to the hospital’s participation.
The proposal fared favorably among a sample of aldermen. Hill Alderwoman Jackie James said she supported the hearing “in theory,” but had doubts as to how much would come out of such a meeting. “I can’t see the hospital coming to the board admitting that they did something wrong.”

Goldfield isn't qualified to grill a sandwich.
Yet another New Haven politician climbing the political ladder. If you look closely, you can see the gleam of "future mayoral candidate" in his eyes. Why doesn't he jump all over the increase in violent crime in the Elm City...or the lack of a comprehensive economic development program...or the sub-standard airport...or the parking crisis near the railroad station? Why? Because these are difficult problems requiring educated analysis and hard work, and no promise of union support for his soon-to-be future political aspirations.
You gotta love how Goldfield won't even allow the Board of Aldermen the dignity of a vote for "his" public hearing. Given the calls by some New Haven politicians for "card count neutrality" at YNHH...where employees would be forced to forfeit their right to vote for or against the union...it seems that the right to vote is something that is not held in very high esteem by some of our elected officials here in New Haven.

Earth to Petrini: The hospital's -- or upper management's -- participation is that it orchestrated the anti-union meetings. What a joke this guy is. Does he really think anyone's falling for his BS? Or is it that YNHH's arrogance overrides any sense of honest and ethical fair play? But, hey, that's what big bucks can buy.

Earth to Joe: Does anyone for one New York City second believe that this lying, thevining, two-faced, manipulative group of self-smitten Union losers (of a secret ballot election) ever had any intention of actually HAVING this election? What rock have you and all your payola-receiving, drunk Henry Morris wanna be's been living under? The fact is the overwhelming majority of the VOTING members of the Hospital HATE this Union and the corrupt collection of manipulated morons in its lair. That management stated WITHIN THE RULES material outlining what the uNION GIVES VS WHAT IT TAKES was the Union taking its proverbial football and walking off in a huff because of someone standing up to them, with the TRUTH. If Carl Goldfield and this Union were selling furnaces, i;d be right next to them selling fire extinguishers.

Carl:
Be sure to replace the page from John DeSefano's book on "How To win lousy friends and try to influence really stupid people."
Unless you're planning on writing your own version and having your own failed goober-natorial book signing later on this year. Be sure your union friends bring their crayons for you to sign with.

Give me a break! Doesn't anyone care about what the decent hard working employees of YNHH have to say about this whole Union thing? All I read about are the negatives regarding YNHH. How about giving the employees a say.
Would you want Union people taking care of one of your loved ones when they are in dire straits?

I'm a YNHH employee (19 years). I am voting NO if we ever get the chance to vote. All my coworkers, and everyone I ever speak to in the hallways, agree with me. We don't need a union at the Hospital. Our managers never treated us the way Yale University managers used to treat their employees. I especially don't want those incredibly aggressive union organizers to get a dime of my money. If you do your job correctly, you don't need a union in the first place.

Let's ditch the hyperbole for a second.
Yale-Haven Hospital broke the law. This is not the first time the broke the law. They broke the law when they funnelled the state's $52 million free bed fund into their own endowment rather than providing free care for poor patients and instead put 10,000 people in medical debt and took out liens on 1,000 new haven houses between 1996 and 2003. They broke the law when they used their private police force to repeatedly harass and arrest workers who were union activists for leafletting outside of their shops.
What's egregious about this particularl violation is that it comes in the wake of promises of change and goodwill from the community. They said they were turning over a new leaf, we believed them, and they pretty much spat in our faces and returned to the same old rhetoric of denial and "avoidance."
So I'm glad that the BOA is going to hold Borgstrom accountable, and I hope they do this in more ways than simply bringing her before the committee.
YNHH employees deserve the right to decide about this free from the kinds of harassment and intimidation that the hospital administration has rendered endemic over the last nine years.
