City Wants King’s Property

Adding to the woes of the city’s most recently arrested alderman, the city has kicked off a legal process to foreclose one of Alderman Drew King’s properties because he owes thousands of dollars in back taxes.
King, who represents the Dixwell neighborhood, just got bailed out of jail for violating a protective order against a young girlfriend he allegedly assaulted over a feud over a hot dog.
His two properties on Edgewood and Sherman Avenues are both being investigated by the Livable Cities Initiative as possible illegal rooming houses.
On top of all this, the alderman owes thousands of dollars in back taxes: Records show he owes $1,789.94 on 274 Edgewood Ave. (pictured above; where the hot dog dispute took place) and $3,078.72 on 85 Sherman Ave., a reportedly well-kept apartment building.
Both payments were due July 1, 2006.
King’s failure to pay the taxes at this point makes him “delinquent” and gives the city the authority to seek foreclosure, according to C.J. Cuticello, the city tax collector. And that’s just what the city has done.
On Dec. 14, the city hired an outside attorney to kick off the legal process to seek foreclosure on the 85 Sherman Ave. property (pictured), according to the collector. The attorney has not yet filed a suit in court, but is in the process of gathering info to do so, Cuticello said.
The matter will then be settled in New Haven Superior Court, where King could end up losing the property. King has already paid off the mortgage on the building, which he bought in March 2005 for $142,000, records show. He could not be reached Monday, but has told the Independent he hopes to sell his property.
