Sex and the Digital Zoning Map

IMG_0688.JPGMike Piscitelli was all smiles as he unveiled the city’s new digital format for its zoning maps. “This application might have the least sex appeal of any,” he said to the commissioners, “but for those of us who regularly have to adjust the maps, the digitized format is a thing of beauty.”

In fact the digitization of New Haven’s 21 zoning sections in a computer mapping system on the city’s web site is more or less complete. Piscitelli, a staffer in the City Plan Department, appeared before the City Plan Commission Wednesday night to secure permission to amend the zoning ordinance text to allow for the official — apparently after the fact! “” conversion.

If approved by the Board of Alderman, where the matter will be directed, the conversion will simply be put into the language of the zoning ordinance.

Heretofore, Piscitelli explained, each zoning change required a laborious, manually done change, that often took more time than desirable. Now zoning changes can be efficiently updated. All zoning procedures remain unchanged. However, if you go to the site, it will now say “This map is maintained in digital format and reproduced for your convenience “” no paper version is available or necessary.”

This is great! But will the maps be available on-line to the public? If so, what's the URL?
