SPJ Takes A Stand, Discovers a “Journalist”

kennycloseup-007.jpgKen Krayeske (pictured), a longtime reporter and activist, had trouble getting bigshots from the official Journalism Club to back him when the cops arrested him and held him on $75,000… for taking a photo of the governor in public. Now the Society of Professional Journalists — weeks behind the governor, state legislators, and just about everyone else but the cops themselves — has weighed in. Click here to read more from the SPJ website. Other journos were debating whether Krayeske deserved the title. What was the reasoning behind the arrest?

Posted by: Dave Aeikens | February 15, 2007 12:56 PM

SPJ has not been debating whether Ken Krayeske is a journalist. It's clear he is and has been. We prefer not to try to define it because that can cause problems, too. He writes freelance articles and once worked for the Hartford Courant. The deliberate discussions we have been having have been about whether he was acting as a journalist or activist at the time of his arrest. We wanted to make sure we understood the situation.
SPJ prefers that journalists not straddle the line between journalist one day and activist the next.

I think fulltime journalist would prefer that someone else at SPJ take over the Legal Defense Fund chair.
