Ortiz Answers The Question Of The Hour
by Staff | March 19, 2007 4:19 PM | Permalink | Comments (6)
Why did Police Chief Francisco Ortiz (pictured above) transfer Lt. Billy White — then change his mind? That’s the question of the hour in the unfolding city police bribery and theft scandal. Ortiz offered answers Monday. Click here to read about it.
Other developments:
The state’s ACLU chief (pictured) accused the mayor of ducking responsibility and questions about the affair by “scapegoating” another prominent black leader with accusations of a “shakedown.” Click here to read more.
Embattled Lt. Billy White (pictured) — at the center of the scandal after his arrest last week in an FBI sting — was honored as “cop of the year” at this police-firefighter hockey game last year.
Cllck here to read a potboiler 57-page FBI affidavit about the case; here to read about the “Estupido” incident on Long Wharf; and here, here, here, here, here , here and here for other coverage of the case.

Just like Mr. Mayor said.. Ms. Borgstrom should be held accountable for her managers....... So should Mr. Mayor be held accountable for his employees.
I feel for the families involved so I won't comment on the employee's (Cops) of Mayor D.
Hey Mr. Mayor...Maybe if you were not so worried about stopping the YNHH cancer center, you would have known what else was going on in your city.
Maybe a card count should be held in the city of New Haven to Vote "out" Mayor John D?

Of course the mayor would say he knows nothing about it. He porbably knew nothing about Brancati when Sal made his way back into the mayor's group. Maybe White was giving the mayor money for his campaign. Just about anyone who worked on it got favored treatment and city jobs. Developer's got the extra influence peddled. Even Mr. Smuts was setting special meetings to see what kind of thigs could be worked out for certain cntributers. I know somebody will say...hey that's politics...I say no that corrpution. Fire Ortiz...he already had one vote of no confidence. Maybe now we know why. Most cops are hard working. But White and his crew beat kids up, in a bad way, many times in Newhallville. I personally saw what they did to one kid. I hope an effort is made to get a community meeting so people can tell the horror stories of being attacked by out of control cops, who act like they have no obligation to live by t he laws they are suppose to uphold. The entire city needs a clean-out, and I hope voters will have some chpice.

ok ...... First I feel really bad for Billy White's wife who is a wonderful person.
Billy was a cop for 39 years, for the inner-city, that is way to long and should never of been allowed. Mostly because he was a Narcotics officer and that type of work does damage there prespective of what is right and wrong.
I really think that Ortiz's hands were tied. You know the old saying "to many chef's in the kitchen" he was unable to do alot of things he wanted to do because of the dirty politics in this city. I think if he had more control he would do an excellent job. Get the good ole' boys out and get some new blood in.
Johnny D. Should not have anything to do with the police dept. It is not what he knows and he would not have the full understanding of the job unless he did it everyday! The same goes for every other suit that trys to run the police dept. Let the cops do there jobs and maybe they will be able to clean up this dang city! But first lets use this situation to clean house! Because there are alot more cops out there that are not working when they are on the clock. And I am a witness to some cops roughing up a kid but I felt is was more of a tough love thing. Scare them when there young so that they do not do wrong. But there is a right and wrong way of doing that and I am sure some cops have taken it over the line. (I know they have!!)
Billy White hated Johnny D. I don't think he was a supporter. But I think that his arrest records all the criminals he but in jail his time undercover allowed him to stay.
I am still waiting to see who the other cops are I can thinks of at least 3 off the top of my head.

Maybe we can get Andy Ross to (re)declare for Mayor. He doesn't seem all that bad anymore!
It seems we really do need new blood. Maybe ignorance will be bliss!

Just an FYI, everything I've heard suggests that Billy White and his whole extended family 100% loathe/hate/despise the Mayor (and vice versa). So to suggest any sort of connection is pretty rediculous and unfounded. As for Ortiz, didn't he get a vote of no-confidence _because_ he tried to demote White? So what the heck is "Of Course" talking about??

From the March 20 Register article, entitled "FBI gets more files from NHPD," comes this quote:
"The city is considering locating IVE outside police headquarters."
(IVE is NHPD's Internal Affairs Department.)
...pregnant pause of the day...
