Attention Sam’s Shoppers

While most of New Haven slept early Thursday morning, city cops Jason Koenig, Frank Canace and Pete Ballolli made some eagle-eyed arrests outside Sam’s Food Store on Whalley Avenue and near the Cedar Hill Hess.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokeswoman Bonnie Winchester:

Officer Ballolli was responding at 2:04 a.m. to a report of an attempted burglary near State and May streets. He noticed a “suspicious person” near the Hess gasoline station there. He stopped the man and found a loaded .40 caliber gun, marijuana and money on him, then arrested the man, who is 34.

Then, in a separate incident, Sgt. Koenig and Officer Canace were on routine patrol across town when they saw what they considered a suspicious vehicle parked in the Sam’s lot at Whalley and Sherman avenues. They ran the plates; the car had been reported stolen out of New Britain. Someone found a car that had been stolen out of New Britain. The cops arrested the men inside the car.

Police received reports of gunshots fired in apparently separate incidents Wednesday night by Hotchkiss Street (at 8:30) and Clover Place (8:40). No one was reported hit by the bullets.
