Bikes, Birds, Spring in New Haven
by Allan Appel | April 2, 2007 8:19 AM | Permalink | Comments (1)
In addition to the greater numbers of sparrows perching on the tree limbs fat with juice and the robins hopping about the just mowed lawns, a sure sign of spring and summer in New Haven are the bicycles also appearing in greater numbers, in different groupings, and sometimes in mass.
Hundreds were recently spotted on a beautiful Friday afternoon assembling at the northeast corner of the Green. Then they moved up Chapel Street in a neat line.
It was the monthly ride of Critical Mass. They seemed as varied as the birds. Some rode with two hands, some with one; some were doing fine with the “Look, Ma, no hands” style, although one wonders whether such circus tricks belong on the street. Some wore helmets; many more, alas, did not.
On they moved, and another season when birds, bicycles, humans, and automobiles mix it up in the glorious spring, and summer begins. (Click here for a past debate among Independent readers, some of whom have a more critical view of the “masses.”)

It's always great to see alot of bikes on the road. I wish I could have made it but unfortunately work got in the way. Hopefully we can get just as many bikes riding to Hartford on Sat April 14th for the StepItUp Bike Tour(http://events.stepitup2007.org/events/show/1027). I'd like to show the state what New Haven seems to already know. Bikes are great for people, towns and the planet.
