East Rock Public Housing A No-Go

Controversial plans to move public housing into two East Rock homes as part of a court-ordered integration effort were aborted when the homes got sold. The housing authority had better luck in Westville, where it just authorized the purchase of a single-family home.
Two East Rock homes slated for purchase by the Housing Authority of New Haven (HANH) were recently snatched up by other buyers, reported HANH board Chairman Bob Solomon at a board meeting Tuesday.
“We’re the last ones that people want to sell to, because it takes too long,” he explained.
Moving along in its effort to replace units of public housing lost in the demolition of the Elm Haven high-rises, HANH commissioners authorized the purchase of a Westville home. A total 19 units of “scattered-site” housing, out of a total 183, remain to be placed, Solomon said.
A public hearing on the home at 21 Long Hill Terrace passed Monday without a single attendee, giving HANH the green light to close on the property.
Commissioners Tuesday approved a sales price of $250,000 plus due diligence and closing costs, plus no more than $15,000 for renovation and improvements.
Solomon said he hopes HANH would close within the next 30 days: “We can pay cash.”
