Rate The Candidate

Is New Haven a “city in crisis”? And does this man know how to save it?
“Why didn’t they know, when it seems that many others did?” Jim Newton said of City Hall and the police theft and bribery scandal, as he announced his candidacy this past weekend. (Click here to read a full account of the event. After the Register failed to cover the announcement, campaign has scheduled a re-rerun for Wednesday.)
Click on the play arrow to watch a snippet of Newton’s kick-off speech, the “city in crisis” part. Then rate the video from 1-5 (and give reasons) on substance and style by posting a comment below. Use this scale:
1= No way I’d vote for this guy
2= Adequate performance
3= So so
4= Keep talking
5= Right on!

3--in a town where so much power is concentrated in the hands of the mayor it makes more than a little sense to hold the mayor accountable for corruption. nothing earth-shattering in this message, but it's one the majority of NewHaveners want to hear

2- True this is an issue in New Haven and a big one. But the city is in the prosess of starting to handle it. I think that if he is running on this alone we will be in alot of troble. This city has a list of problems that need to be handled.

Campaigning is more than pointing out the inadequacies of your opponent. Show me an understanding of the problems, a proven track record of success in those areas identified as critical, and a plan to address them. Give me some substance. Give me a decent alternative to DeStafano.
A hint, folks. New Haven's future lies in economic development, not in placating a culture of victimization. The first guy that actually talks about ED and realistic, sustainable planning gets my vote.

#1- New Haven may have many problems that need attention - particularly in the minority neighborhoods- but it has come a long, long way under DeStefano's solid and at times visionary leadership. It was truly a "City in Crisis" under the woefully incompetent leadership of Newton supporter John Daniels. It is however, too bad that during DeStefano's tenure he's had only one serious challenge -- by State Sen. Looney. The city needs good, experienced candidates to bring out the best in our leaders. Jim Newton can do a lot of good in New Haven... but not by being Mayor.
