artspace%201.JPGHundreds of people showed up for the opening of a new group show at Artspace, 101 Dresses. (Pictured, left to right: Joan Gardner, one of the exhibiting artists, Clarisse Pollack, Elaine Holmes, Co-Curators Linda Lindroth and Denise Markonish, Frank Garner, and Helena Estes, daughter of Eleonor Estes.)

The opening reception took place last weekend. Artspace sent along these photos.

According to a release, the show “celebrates fashion in contemporary art. On view are 101+ examples reflecting ideas of fashion in all media, including painting, sculpture, photography,
digital art and narrative text, by a mix of local and national visual artists, fashion designers and collectors. In addition to the exhibition at Artspace, community activities will provide further
focus on this subject and its history in New Haven, which was once a major center for garment manufacturing.”

artspace%202.JPGThe show also “pays tribute to local children’s author and West Haven librarian Eleanor Estes (1906-1988), who would have been 101 years old on May 9, the exhibition’s opening day.” (Pictured here: Guests modeling the work of Jonathan Waters, in the style of a 1920s constructivst happening: Melissa Logan, Barbara Marks, Helen Kauder, Jane Logan, Emilie Waters, Melissa Waters.)
