bike%20and%20flag.JPGIt was a memorable kick-off to New Haven’s BikeSummer, as more than 100 cyclists participated in the regular last-Friday-of-the-month Critical Mass ride and ended up in the big parking lot behind The Devil’s Gear Bike Shop on Chapel Street near Hamilton. There, they feasted on food for the body (burgers, dogs, chips, hummus, drinks) and the soul (music from local bands).

Paul Hammer rode the bike pictured above, with this flag and this sign, throughout the 90-minute ride.

bikes.JPGBikes were parked in numbers so big the scene looked like Amsterdam or Davis, California.

And a group of cyclists took advantage of all that smooth pavement for a rousing game of bike polo.

BikeSummer is a roving celebration of all things bicycle, and is happening this year in New Haven, sponsored by Elm City Cycling. It features a whole bunch of bike-related activities, from guided tours during the International Festival to art exhibits to bike jamborees for kids. For more info, visit the group’s website.
