Discussion Shifts From West Nile to Youth Violence

Mayor John DeStefano came to the Dixwell/ Newhallville Senior Center Wednesday to discuss West Nile Virus and how New Haven residents can protect themselves. Some people in attendance, including George E. Holloway, pictured, took the opportunity to grill the mayor about issues in the city; primarily youth violence.
Holloway, who at times told the mayor to wait for him to finish, asked if jobs were being created for the kids.
DeStefano, pictured, said that the real problem with youth in the city is the “3 percent” who return to their homes after school to find “no food” and no one there for them. “That’s the group i’m particularly concerned with,” he said.
Still, DeStefano said he is concerned with getting jobs for the other kids, “the majority” in the city.
Before the public asked questions of the mayor, he gave advice on how people can stay free of mosquito bites this summer.
“Common sense stuff,” he said in a lively and playful fashion. “Don’t leave standing water. Put screens in windows.”
The city brought free bug spray plastered with New Haven labels, complete with Mayor DeStefano’s face, as well as informational handouts.
City Public Health Director William Quinn, pictured, told the more than 50 people in attendance that the city is planning on putting “dumps” in all the parks to kill mosquito larva.
Another resident asked about fixing the park benches in Beaver Ponds Park. DeStefano said he would have the parks department check it out. After seeing the response from the mayor, others began asking about cracked sidewalks, broken roads and dead or overgrown trees. There were so many specific complaints voiced that DeStefano said he would set up a meeting for the public works director to come to the senior center with complaint froms.
DeStefano said to combat youth violence in the city, the kids need to be caught younger, “when they’re easier to get through to.” He said the city is investing money in early childhood education, particularly full-day kindergarten.
He also said the city is hiring as many police as it can. He mentioned that when President Clinton was in office, the city got major federal grants to hire cops. “We’re now using tax money,” he said.
“Any category of crime is down, burglaries, robberies,” DeStefano said. “But the percentage done with guns is up.”

2 simple solutions.
1) Hire more cops. I don't care how, just do it now.
2) Lock violent criminals, even for minor offenses, up for a minimum of 40 years. That will "get through to them." 40 years of life in prison is sad, but so is the situation we are in where crime is tolerated.

Ok still mad at Johnny but he is right, that 3% being helped will make a great difference. That's 3% not out getting into high level trouble, that's 3% not dragging down the borderline children that are not in that 3% into there world , which will save at least another 10%. That 3% 's family and parents being helped will improve the surround community. So he is right that is the right place to start! And he is right all city's have been tragically effected by the lack of police funding from the federal level , we see this problem everywhere.
But.,..... again with the incorrect stat's! I am sorry Johnny I beg to differ on those stat's I have to ask you a very real question... just because the calls are not coming in, does not mean the crime is not there! Ask the citizens of this city what would you call the police about?? When drug dealers have set up in shops and house and street corners and out of town drug dealers use this city as an exchange point would that be considered in your crime stat's?? When police say they can not do anything about the dealing because the law prevents them from doing anything..is that in your stat's?? Is ok for certain communities to have drug dealing as there area's main business?? Are those area expectable loses??
And the reason I ask is because this is who, what and why we are having the problems in those community's and the surrounding ones that are getting the trickle down from it. THE SOURCE is where crime needs to be fought from stop guarding the good area and start cleaning up the bad ones!
If we tackled it that way I think we can become a great and save city again.
Love the pic on the bug spray...hmmm kind of funny .

The mayor wants to talk about mosquitos and the potential for the West Nile Virus. Wow..
Meanwhile, we have drive by shootings, muggings in Westville leading to armed patrols, new schools needing repairs already, a reported $6.7 million deficit this fiscal year, a 16% pay increase for senior management retroactive to January, and a whopping big propertytax increase. Mr. Mayor, I'll give you a clue -- it's not the mosquitos that are biting me -- it's you. Where are your priorities? And exactly how many New Haveners get West Nile?
P.S. Maybe if you filled in the swamp next to the famed environmental school with the multi million dollar skywalk and nature center -- there would be less potential for West Nile.
