“It’s bittersweet,” said Silverman Monday of her imminent departure from City Hall. As director of special projects at City Hall’s youth department, Silverman has spent the last half a year focusing on the Open Schools Program, which keeps schools open during the summer and fall for teen activities. The program was expanded from three to nine schools.

Silverman arrived in City Hall in November, 2001, taking over the Elderly Services department. She later moved to the mayor’s office as deputy chief of staff. When Mayor DeStefano returned to the city after a failed gubernatorial bid and shook up City Hall staff positions, Silverman got the job taking charge of special projects for the Mayor’s Youth Initiative.

As of August 1, she’ll keep working with youth, on a different set of needs - sexual health. As part of her job as vice president of education and training at Planned Parenthood of Connecticut, she’ll train teachers and staff to bring sex ed lessons to the classroom.

Silverman won’t be new to the line of work—she worked at Planned Parenthood from 1997 to 1999, opening a clinic in Hartford and running the New Haven clinic when it sat at 50 Fitch St. “I’m excited” to return to the agency, she said.
