Victory Gardens Seniors Get Organized

Seniors at Dixwell Avenue’s Victory Gardens tuned in for a police presentation that yielded precious advice about safety practices — and a surprise tutorial on how to ID a perp on the run.
Forget about describing every last item of clothing: bad guys will usually peel off a top layer as they flee the crime scene, explained Officer Joe Avery.
The secret’s in the kicks.
No matter how down-and-out the criminal, chances are he’ll be wearing a flashy pair of sneakers that will let cops know who to collar.
That was one of many pieces of police wisdom handed down at a community meeting at the Victory Garden apartment complex in Dixwell Wednesday afternoon.
Lisa Hopkins, who’s running for alderwoman against Greg Morehead in Dixwell’s Ward 22 (she lost a special election to him earlier this year), organized the question-and-answer session between neighborhood cops and senior citizens.
There was no shortage of issues to discuss. After a few introductory remarks from Hopkins — she urged the audience to do their part to keep the complex safe by locking doors — residents recounted a series of harrowing encounters with addicts, trespassers, exhibitionists, dealers—and one man who went door-to-door trying to pawn a bottle of Percocet…in a building occupied almost exclusively by senior citizens.
Lisa Hopkins said she had called the meeting because she had heard complaints from residents about loitering in the parking lot and various unsavory mischief going on behind the building.
“I sat down and tried to figure out the safety issues in this building,” she said. “Safety is a key issue in all senior citizens’ buildings.”
Sgt. Anthony Duff, the top cop in the Dixwell neighborhood, began his presentation with a rundown of past and present criminal activity in the area. Police had issued a 60-day closing order to an after-hours club on Henry and Townsend that was selling liquor on a bogus permit, he said. Once in a while, he added, the owner would obtain a 24-hour liquor permit and hang on to it for months, presenting it as the real thing to whomsoever cared to ask. The trick had gotten old.
Duff urged residents of the complex to be vigilant about criminal activity on their doorstep, insisting on the importance of calling complaints in to the police — even anonymously — so that an officer could look into the problem. Calling the management team was never effective, he added.
Officer Joe Avery spoke next. He pleaded with residents to abandon their fear of being called out as a “snitch.”
“I hear from a lot of people, ‘I don’t want to be snitching,’” he said. “But you don’t have to give your name [when calling the police]. ‘Say, ‘I don’t want to talk to an officer;’ someone will come by and check out the scene.”
He added that the building wouldn’t last long in its current immaculate state if residents didn’t take safety into their own hands.
“If you let this building be overcome with crime, it will,” he said. “It’s the best-looking building for seniors in New Haven, and you want to keep it that way.”
At the end of the meeting, residents resolved to repeat the experience once a month.

I think it is about time that someone took the time to look out for our seniors. Ward 22 has been ignored so long and has had such a long list of useless alderman, and then the Mayor places Mr. Moreland in the position to continue the tradition. Mr. Moreland Who has no sense of loyalty to his Community or his Neighbors, does not understand what being a LEADER means. Lisa Hopkins is a self started and self thinker. I believe that the the work she is currently doing is just the beginning of GREAT things to come... and a positive change for Ward 22!!! GOOD LUCK Lisa!

This ward should vote for Lisa - she's smart, informed and is constantly working to improve communication and access to city government. It believe Lisa will actually read the documents and budget, understand the underlying issues and vote accordingly. Most importantly, she's not part of the political machine - just a good citizen who will work to be the people's representive, not the mayor's representative to the people. Go Lisa...

I belive his name is Alderman Morehead not Moreland. The guy has been in office what 4 months and people expect the ward to be completely flipped over. He is a self started, dedicated family man who is working to improve his ward. Since he was elected he has brought life back into Ward 22 through different activities that engage everyone from the young people to the seniors. The community knows that they matter and deserve the right representation on the board and that is why they elected him over Ms. Hopkins in the special elections. He knows where he comes from and he is strong in his community values.
Yes, it is about time someone fights for the seniors and Mr. Morehead has been doing that over the past few months. He's found different ways to make them feel part of the community and hears their issues from too much violence, to lack of transportation to drugs in the neighborhood. He is facing the situations and not turning a deaf ear. I believe he has two businesses and can tell the difference between a right vote and a wrong vote and therfore votes based on judgment and what will be the best for Ward 22. Give the guy a shot and Vote Morhead on Sept 11.

I don't know Ms. Hopkins or Mr. Morehead but felt compelled to respond to the statement regarding "the long list of useless alderman". Don't denigrate those past politicians who have tried to do work for the neighborhood just to make Ms. Hopkins look good. I believe Mae Ola Riddick was in that ward, and putting aside whatever issues you may have with crazy Mae Ola, she was a strong advocate for poor folks and minorities; and she made that know in New Haven and D.C. Right now Ms. Hopkins is like any other prospective politician, let's not get it twisted. Let's hope if she is elected she does not become a lackey but even more importantly, hope she is savy enough to be "anti-machine", yet get things done for her neighborhood.

Just a point of accountability: Mr.Moorehead voted with the DeStefano machine 100% of the time since he's been in office. 100% - including the new city budget that increases spending by $30 million to a new record amount -- and pays for it with 25% increases in parking fines including for the illusive street sweeping days in your neighborhood. These higher taxes make it impossible for seniors to stay in their homes without giving the city a lein and passing the bill for their taxes off to younger families with kids trying to make it. Just some thoughts...

I am a ward 22 resident ... where has Lisa Hopkins been before the last election. what has she done? her and the other person now come out of hiding when election season rolls around. they both are bad news and i feel that no alderman over here has had the peoples interest in mind until now. i made a great choice and will vote to elect him again next month. i have seen Mr. Morehead active in our community right after he was elected and he still is. i always read the posts online and don't comment too much, but i had to say something regarding the great job that my Alderman is doing. i have a father that stays at 69 webster st and mr. morehead has had meetings in there to discuss the issues that were going on. i know for a fact that he was the one that got the community rooms open in both senior buildings and my friend monica is back over at the building coordinating the activities. she has not been in that position for about a year due to management and mr. morehead was the one that fought to get her back. i also have to add that my past alderman did not do anything when he was in office to open up the community rooms for my father and the other seniors or didnt do anything to make sure that the seniors took trips often. mr. morehead just got into office back in april and he did that. i have been to all of the meetings and functions that he has had in our ward within the past four months so i see firsthand the change that is going on. how can you janet or garyd say something about the alderman when you don not even live in our ward. if you lived here, you would see firsthand the progress that is taking place. why don't you both come to ward 22. don't be fooled by mcgruff holding a meeting.

First of all I must say when I stated that there have been a long list of useless Alderman Mae ola was the last person on my mind. Personally I do not have an issue with Mae ola, However it does amaze me that Dixwell and Newhallville back up to Yale University and are still the poorest communities within the city.
And doesn't it surprise anyone that no matter what has come up to vote at the board alderman
level the vote from Ward 22, has always been cast toward the Mayors' agenda, Which also includes Mr. "Moreheads'" vote.
Let's be for real a politian is a politian, they all have their personal agenda whether it is geared toward themselves or honestly helping the people in their prospective communities.
We also know that anytime an Alderman is running for office and the Mayors' close office staff is walking with him and assiting his campaign he is certainly a "Mayors' political Machine"
Personnally I do not know Lisa or Greg, I have been in the community for a very long time and have seen other community grow and have seen ours go lacking.
We as a city have giving the Mayor so much political power by allowing him to be in office TOOOOOOO long,he believes he can choose our candidate, register Yale students to vote, bus them in to the polls and "win" an election, which is what happen with the special election and WE can not let this happen again!
Therefore we as a Ward need to show up to vote!
Because the Mayor' office is supporting and running (Mr. "Moreland", "Morehead" or as I was corrected and the spelling was still not correct "Morhead".)campaign I am not convinced that he is the Right person for the job.
Lets get it right just because someone is a "dedicated family man", does not make him or her the right person for this Ward and our needs.
We need someone who is "dedicated" to Ward 22!

I just wanted to write and clarify a few things...I will start with this post, -
We as a city have giving the Mayor so much political power by allowing him to be in office TOOOOOOO long,he believes he can choose our candidate, register Yale students to vote, bus them in to the polls and "win" an election..-
Let me start by saying, just like I stated before for anyone that didn't follow the other stories on me,
1). I contacted City Hall and inquired about running. I went to City Hall and met with Mayor Destefano, after I decided to run and thats when he said that he would support me. How is it that when a couple of other people went that were my opponents back in April to get the Mayor's support, no one said anything about them. But I guess you never received that memo! He didn't choose me, I CHOSE to run.
2). The Mayor hasn't been in Yale to register anyone to vote, I got onto the campuses and spent countless hours speaking with the students for about two weeks straight and seeing their needs just like I did a month prior on the streets in my Ward. No one was BUSSED to the polls, I let the residents of my Ward drive MY minivan to pick up other residents from Yale and the community to vote. I have 4 dorms that are located in MY Ward. We had about 4 cars going back and forth that residents that lived in MY ward contributed for that day.. There was NO talk about other Alderpeople reaching out to the dorms that were in their Ward also for other elections. Why is that?
3). The reason that I won the election was because of the hard work that was put into the election due to MY hard work. The residents AGAIN voted for me to be in this position. If you still want to say I won based on Yale, lets look at the facts..
I had 243 votes, Yale made up 91. Subtract what Yale did and you still have 152 votes. I like to deal with the facts with everything..
Like i said before, everyone has a right to write whatever they want on these posts, but don't use these posts to hide behind a computer screen. Call me directly if you want to know ANYTHING that goes on in my Ward. If I did something(yes even the items that I voted on) I am Man enough to clarify why I did what I did. Also, before I did anything in my Ward when it came to voting on items, I give my residents a chance to come to meetings and ask questions before it goes to the floor. I guess again, those that write the trashing posts are not in my Ward to see what I am doing or to participate. Before you speculate and try to bad mouth me on what you think I did or didn't do, CALL me. For anyone that lives in my Ward, they know that I am ALWAYS accessible and have taken care of and rectified many issues. Just because my face is NOT always in the news, doesn't mean that I am not working for my Community. I created a website exclusively for my Ward where people like yourselves can stay up to date on our Ward since right now Ward 22 is the talk of the City..
If you would like to know what I am doing, and for those that don't KNOW me, come to my Ward, let's have lunch on me. lol 203.507.7766
Don't talk about it, Be about it!

Hey Mr Morehead,
Saw your website that you claim was "created a website exclusively for my Ward where people like yourselves can stay up to date on our Ward".
Looks like a campaign ad to me.

Greg Morehead...
You'r talking around the issues again. After only being on the board for three meek weeks, and after attending only one budget work shop for thirty minutes, you voted for the highest budget increase ever in the city of New Haven, over thirty million dollars for five years.
Not because you were convinced that it was in the best interest of your constituents, but because you believed it was expected of you.
To insure you voted the party line, you were handled by Alders Blango and Shah.
Now you tell us about all the things you are doing for the seniors and the kids, like cook-outs and side shows which merely deflects from the effect of the five years of tax increases the seniors and familys of the kids, you tried to fool with your hospitality, will have to endure.
To be an effective alderman you must be an independent thinker, doer, and willing to stand behind your conviction. In the short time you have been in office you have not shown those qualities.
So stop the head games and be the man you claim to be. This is your last schooling bro...out>>>
