Attention Wal-Mart Riders

IMG_0002.jpgThe Q bus has started going to the store more often at peak hours. Same with Amity Shopping Center at the other end, as well as BJ’s. CT Transit has made changes on 11 routes and in downtown transfer spots.

The changes went into effect this week. Click here for the details. In addition to more peak service, CT Transit has switched some times of bus stops.

While the increased service have drawn praise, another change is more complicated — the movement of downtown hubs (the “pulse” where riders transfer from one bus route to another).

“The move of evening and Sunday bus hub stops from Elm and Temple,” one rider wrote to the Independent, “makes transferring more difficult. For example, passengers need to walk from
Center Church and Temple to the NBC Studios on Church Street to transfer from an Eastbound bus like the FQZ/GF from Westville to a Northbound one like the J8 up Whitney Avenue. Perhaps Mike Piscitelli knows why this occurred.”

IMG_8911.JPGMike Piscitelli (pictured), the city’s transportation czar, indeed had an answer.

“Regarding the pulse, the move back to include Church / Chapel actually is part of the pre-Cordish Agreement operations plan,” Piscitelli wrote in an email message. (David Cordish was the original redeveloper of the Omni Hotel building, who negotiated moving bus stops away from the Green). “As you may recall the evening pulse in the Temple / Elm Street area was quite congested since CT Transit could not position every bus against the curb. This created both a traffic back-up and a safety problem for the riders. Church / Chapel improves the staging of the north-bound buses.

“Some riders do need to walk across the lower Green, but since the pulse is time-specific there is no increased risk of missing your transfer.”

Piscitelli praised the increased service CT Transit began this week as “relatively modest” but “much better than when we had to study the timetables looking for service reductions.”

Looking ahead, Piscitelli wants to see new “Cross-town West” service, a route “proposed back in 2000 ” that would “runs mainly along Route 10 and would connect with nearly every one of the westerly lines.”

Let's hope one day evening and Sunday bus stops for Eastbound buses will be restored on Chapel between Temple and Church as occurs when Temple Street is closed for special events. This true restoration of all pre-Cordish transfer stops will make transfers from to Northbound buses safer and quicker for those who have trouble walking.

In the meantime, let's hope that starting this year the City does a better job of removing snow and ice near downtown bus stops without which the longer walks for transferring will be treacherous.

AS A CTTRANSIT USER, THE NEW SERVICE ON THE D GRAND ROUTE TO UNIVERSAL DRIVE IS ALSO WORTH MENTIONING. I DON'T HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY DOWNTOWN AND GO THROUGH THE HASSLE OF TRANSFERRING. I JUST HOP ON THE BUS AND GO STRAIGHT THRU AND MY FRIENDS ALONG MIDDLETOWN AVENUE NOW DON'T HAVE TO WALK AS FAR TO GET THE BUS. AND THE BEST PART IS THE SERVICE ISN'T SPOTTY..LIKE A TRIP HERE AND THERE....IT'S OFTEN. AND HOW ABOUT BEING ABLE TO GO ALL THE WAY TO WATERBURY ON SUNDAY. I CAN NOW GO SHOPPING AND SPEND A LEISURE DAY AT THE MALL, THEY HAVE A TON OF STORES AND PLACES TO EAT. YOU'VE MISSED SOME OF THE BEST CHANGES THIS TIME AROUND IN YOUR ARTICLE. THESE NEW THINGS MEAN A LOT TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO GET TO AND FROM JOBS OR RUN ERRANDS OR ARE RETIRED AND JUST WANT PLACES TO SPEND THEIR LEISURE TIME. THE MEETING TIMES DOWNTOWN, YES, THERE MAY BE SOME INCONVENIENCES, BUT BE THOROUGH, DON'T RISK THE GOOD STUFF JUST TO REPORT THE NOT SO GOOD.

I agree that this second phase of bus service expansions since June, however long they are funded for, increases car-free living options in many ways, especially for downtown residents who have more service to suburban shopping and Sunday recreation venues.

However, seeing mothers with young children jaywalk across Temple Street in the dark to transfer buses that once were on the same block, I must write again about the recent evening and Sunday pulse stop moves.

Also it must be noted that dispatchers in a distant office may wait for calls signifying all buses are at the pulse point before sending them off, but cannot be sure everyone has had a chance to transfer between now more distant buses.
