Chimney Scam Alert

Neighborhood Services Officer Joe Avery issued the following warning of a pair of men scamming the elderly through a fake chimney sweep company with the acronym “CASH.”:
“On the September 26th an elderly woman was called upon by two white males driving a white van with New Jersey rental written on it or possibly enterprise rental.
“The suspects claim to be with a company called Chimney And Safe Homes and was being sent to work on her chimney by her oil company, after officers investigated and called her oil company we found it was in fact it was not true and the oil company never sent anyone to work on the home.
“The suspects charged this woman $1600.00 to clean and do work on her chimney and asked her to write the check out to the abbreviation of there company name, C.A.S.H. The deal was however thwarted when a friend of the elderly woman realized what was happening because she was scammed the same way months before. The suspects were described as two white males 1) 5’9-5’10” tall, slim built, short colored light hair in his 40’s, blue shirt, tan pants. 2) White male 5’6”tall stocky built short light hair blue shirt tan pants white sneakers.
“Please don’t allow anyone to enter your home and don’t do business with anyone who randomly appears at your door. Always check references and ask for identification for those you choose to do business with.
“If you see someone matching this description please call the New Haven Police Robbery / Burglary Unit at 964-6307 or 946 6304 and if it an emergency please call our dispatch room at 946-6316.”
Westville Burglary & Car Theft Alert
The folks at Block Watch 300 in Westville issued the following warning:
“I have just heard from Officer Novella that there were 2 burglaries and 3 burglary attempts today (Tuesday) in the areas of Vista Terrace, Greenhill, Forest Road and Fountain Street. They all happened at some point between noon and 4pm. Please keep windows and doors locked and report any suspicious activity to the police department. The non emergency number is 946-6316 but call 911 if you feel it is an emergency.
“There have also been 2 cars stolen and 3 stolen cars recovered in the Yale Avenue / West Wood / West Rock Area of Westville. Most of the targeted cars were Honda’s. Using a club on the steering wheel is a good deterrent and so is having an alarm that has a visible blinking light. Most of these crimes are crimes of convenience and if your car is less convenient than the next the thief may move on. If your car has been broken into please report it to the police department as well as your block watch captains so we can track these sorts of crimes and the responses they receive.”

WHY EVEN BOTHER when it takes the police 10 hours 32 minutes and 48 seconds to respond.

Gee I hope you get a better attention on the car break ins then we do. You have to insist that you want a report done! They usefully tell you that you don't need one. Tell them you do! We go though this all the time.

Hmm... So these are more of the Kingsley brand of sweeps and not the heartwarming Blake types? Perhaps a Kingsley posing as a Blake or maybe a disgruntled Blake gone wrong.
Damn you sweeps! Damn you!
