A 15-year-old boy arrived at Yale-New Haven Hospital at 1:26 a.m. Sunday with a gunshot to the back of the head. He told police he had been in the passenger seat of a vehicle when he was shot. The boy suffered non-life threatening wounds; a bullet was safely removed from his head.

Read on for more crime details, according to city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga.

A building at the corner of Grand Avenue and Poplar Streets went up in flames shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday. The police arson squad is investigating after a convenience store and apartments above were heavily damaged.

Sunday at 4:28 a.m., a 26-year-old showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. He told police he had been shot at 75 Whalley Ave.

Burglaries

A resident at 433 Lombard Ave. in Fair Haven was home Sunday when a man came in through the front door. The suspect, apparently trying to burglarize the home, saw someone was home and fled through the back. Police caught up with and arrested the suspect, a 39-year-old city man.

Over in the Edgewood neighborhood at 199 Maple St., residents were awakened by a man inside their home at 2:46 a.m. Monday. The burglar fled with electronics.

Street Robberies

At 551 Howard Ave., Sunday at 9:50 p.m., a victim was surrounded by four or five teens who pistol-whipped him and stole two gold chains and a cell phone.

At 1:30 a.m. Sunday at 118 Hallock Ave., a man was robbed of a wallet and 2 cell phones.

And a woman at Chapel Street and Winthrop Avenue was robbed of her phone at 12:28 am. Saturday. Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect on charges of robbery as well as carrying a dangerous weapon and narcotics.

And Yale Police Chief James Perrotti sends in the following report:

“I write to let you that a graduate student was the victim of a robbery at the corner of Church and Center Streets at 5:30 AM on Saturday, September 29. He was approached from behind by three males wearing black hooded sweatshirts who demanded money. Fortunately, the student was not hurt during the incident.

“Also on September 29, in the evening, there was an aggressive panhandling incident that occurred at approximately 9:00 PM. A graduate student was at the corner of College and Wall Streets when she was approached by a woman asking for money. When the student took money from her wallet, the woman held her wrist and grabbed the money from her hand. The woman who took the money is approximately 5’2” tall, has dark acne marks on face, and was wearing loose pants or skirt and a red turban. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

“In addition, later that evening, two undergraduates were walking on Howard Ave. and Spring Street at approximately 11:15 PM when they were surrounded by a group of four or five males, approximately 13-15 years of age, all 5’5” tall or shorter, one wearing a white long sleeve shirt. The group assaulted the students with plastic milk crates while demanding their wallets. The students were treated for lacerations resulting from the assault.”

I like the contrast in crime between Yale Haven and New Haven.

From Behind Crimes:
New Haven: 15 year old shot in the back of the head.
Yale Haven: Student approached from behind and relieved of money (fortunately not hurt).

In Your Face Crimes:
New Haven: A victim was surrounded by teens who pistol-whipped then robbed him.
Yale Haven: A student pulled out her money to give to a panhandler who then "held her wrist and grabbed the money from her hand...Fortunately there were no injuries reported."
Or
Yale Haven: Students were surrounded by boys, "13-15 years of age, all 5'5" or shorter..." and battered with milk crates for their wallets.

Plastic milk crates, you've got to be kidding me. I guess that's the good side of town. Yallies, please, just carry pepper spray for these sorts of things. If all I had to worry about walking in Fair Haven was kids with milk crates... Or 5'2" tall women grabbing my wrist... Hey, we should start a program "Pepper Spray for Police" where we trade Yale students pepper spray for the use of their police force.
