City Hall Comes To Newhallville

City Hall came to Newhallville in the flesh, and heard from parents like PTO Regina Watts and Tammie Bromell that King/Robinson School needs a school nurse and adequate lighting in the back parking lot.
The occasion was Mayor’s Night Out Wednesday at King/Robinson. People were given the chance to voice concerns to a heads of city departments ranging from public works and City Plan to the Commission on Substance Abuse. Most speakers bypassed the Mayor and pitched comments to the department heads.
Watts and Bromell (at right and left in photo) ran from table to table, making sure to talk to all those they thought could help, including parks and rec and the Board of Ed. They did find time for brief discourse with the mayor.
Esther Armand (pictured) of the city’s substance abuse commission said that most of the people she talked to “wanted to know about work groups, commissions, community awareness groups, and prevention and healing.” She spoke with Allan Brison (pictured below), the Green Party’s alderman-elect in the 10th Ward, about getting involved.
Brison perused the tables, acting on specific questions, such as streetlights and concern about a possible drug dealer in his ward, as well as collecting general information on several of the departments.
Cedar Hill Resident Rebecca Turcio (pictured) presented pictures of sidewalks and curbs in her neighborhood that are in need of repair. She also spoke to City Plan’s Giovanni Zinn about the level of mercury in certain light bulbs.
Zinn received a grant from the EPA to work with City Plan to improve awareness about the environment and day-to-day tips that can improve citizen’s health and decrease their global footprint. Zinn distributed Simple Green, an all-purpose cleaner that is less harmful than regular cleaners to the air quality inside homes.

Why were people not here??!!
Everyone that has some issue this was it, your chance. A face to face works so much better than a angry phone call.
Almost every department was here, to talk to you.
And I think that my area benefited from it.
We went in a group...and divide up....
Me and one neighbor went to PW about sidewalks and streets (and my light bulb quest). And then to Traffic and Parking about our intersection (which I promise no more e-mails) :) but that is being fixed after a five year fight!! Thank You Mike!!!
And others went The Parks table about Trees and branch removal and a Playground in our area that needs a major fix.
Then we all went to the Police Table. Strength in numbers. But they were really great. the Chief, Asst Chief and Rebecca out District Manager went over some things with us.
Plus a few other personal issues that each of us went for.
The Mayor took an interest in our group to.
Last time we went we were not that oraginzed but we did get alot done for the area. This time we went prepared with pictures ect. and hope to see a good out come.
People next time go it really is a great resource!

Update****
We so far got our dead trees cut down and branches cut to. We got a cop "Officer Cruz's" from another story here will now be patrolling our area in the day time...still really want one for Thus, Fri, and Sat. nights between 5 and 12....which most of us want. And I got a great call from town hall complimenting the work my community group is doing in our area!
It just goes to show if your area is part of the cure (not waiting for others to do it) all things are possible.
