Unk Wins

In a stunning repudiation of the Cheryl Morris-Ed Marcus school of politics, Anthony “Unk” DaRos swept all five electoral districts as well as the write-in votes to win the race for Branford’s First Selectman.
“People were sick of dirty politics,” DaRos told a wildly enthusiastic group of supporters who had worked for months for this moment. Fran Walsh, DaRos’s running mate, won as Second Selectman. DaRos said his priority was first to heal the town and then to heal the Democratic Party, which had been torn apart by Mrs. Morris. She won as a Democrat two years ago but ran in this campaign as an Independent. .
The long election campaign proved two things: one was that the Morris-Marcus team won virtually no support from the electorate. Morris, the incumbent, received a shockingly low total, a mere 6.6 percent of the overall vote. The other is that despite what Opie viewed as a hard-hitting campaign, DaRos won by a surprisingly large margin of twenty percent.
As the results began to be read at the Opie gathering, silence replaced conversation. There were murmurs of “Not good.” There was no word from Morris’s headquarters. Earlier in the day she told officials at BCTV public television in Branford that she would not participate in the station’s coverage of the First Selectman’s race.
The Democrats also swept 21 of the 30 Representative Town Meeting seats. A sense of relief for the town enveloped the room as DaRos once again took the reins of Town Hall. He had served as First Selectman for three terms, from 1997 to 2003.
“I think the public has spoken, and that a clean campaign pays off,” he told the Eagle as well-wishers surrounded him, shaking his hand. He was referring to the campaigns run by both Morris and Opie, he said. “And that gives us confidence in the public, that the citizens of Branford have seen through all this stuff.
“We have a long way to go. We will pick up the pieces and move ahead,” DaRos said. “We have a lot of repair work to do. But the other thing is I know we have an awful lot of people I can depend on to come forward to do it and that is where our strength is.”
DaRos was a popular First Selectman. The first Selectman serves a two year term, and is the only full-time administrator on a three member Board of Selectman. Opie becomes the Third Selectman. DaRos’s annual salary is set at $89,281.

To All Ivy St, North Main St, Hillside Ave, Silver St, Park Place, North Ivy St and everyone in Branford who supported the "Stop Founder's Village" project & continued with their support in the block captains efforts:
Your support & encouragement, you allowing DaRos lawn signs and then getting the voters out to the polls made a huge difference. I personally wish to thank you for your efforts to BBB4B.
Bringing Branford Back for Branford with Unk and Fran and the entire Democratic team.
The last two years were a struggle to get answers and cooperation in our 5 year struggle to stop this attack on the center of Branford with 120 apartments under the false application of affordable housing. I was not surprised to see 8 Morris signs lined up in front of Rose St apartments owned by the developer of Founder's Village.
We have stuck together, used our own money and fought every inch of the way through Inland-Wetlands and P&Z hearings, winning every battle. Many other citizens of Branford joined in with their support.-Thanks - Now we have a man of vision who has supported us from the very beginning. Remember: Unk stated publicly "The developer bought a mountain and that is what he got".
I wish to thank everyone throughout Branford for supporting Unk and Fran in this election. The You Tube ads and misrepresenting mailers just reinforced the questionable politics of some who put winning ahead of fairness.
The falsehood of Granite Gate just demonstrated how low a group of people will go to win at ALL costs. In reality it showed Unk's integrity and that he is "Solid Like a Rock."
Unk can not do everything. We the people of Branford must now all come together, heal the wounds but let the scars remind us that Branford must come first. Democrats, Republicans and Independent people are all Branford citizens and along with our children must work to keep our Quality of Life at the highest level. The Queach issue demonstrated power & unity in numbers. This election now has put the best team that Branford has to offer out there to work for us.
Unk ,Fran & John Opie. Now let's Just DO it.
