2 Shootings

Overnight shootings took place in Fair Haven and on Blake Street.
Here’s what happened, according to Officer Joe Avery:
Police responded to the Hospital of St. Raphael at 12:11 a.m. Friday. A man was there with a minor gunshot wound. He told the cops he’d been walking west on Blake Street when he heard four gunshots. He “ran into his girlfriend’s house and ‘realized he had been shot.’” The bullet grazed his left cheek. Relatives took him to St. Raphe’s, where he was treated.
Earlier, at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, a 17-year-old girl was riding with two other people around Clinton and Chatham streets in Fair Haven when she noticed they were being followed. People from the other car fired at them. She and the others in her car bolted, running away. They were fired on again, and she was hit in the back. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and treated for minor injuries. It’s too early in the investigation to say what was up with the chase.
A robbery took place in Fair Haven, too, at 8:44 p.m. Two men wearing black masks and gloves and carrying handguns came into Edison Travel Co. on Ferry Street. They punched and kicked the 26-year-old woman on duty, stole an undisclosed amount of money, then fled ran away down Chatham Street toward Lombard. The victim was treated for injuries.
The city also issued the following press release about two narcotics arrests:
“On Thursday evening, members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, comprised in part by New Haven police officers, executed a search and seizure warrant at 19 Stevens Street. Approximately 2 grams of suspected crack cocaine were seized from the residence. Princess
Archie, a 23-year-old New Haven resident was arrested for numerous narcotic related charges. ‘The outcome of this investigation will help improve the quality of life in the Hill neighborhood of New Haven,’ said Sgt. Lisa Daddio.
“Also on Thursday evening, as part of an ongoing investigation concerning drug dealing within the City, two individuals were arrested at 436 Middletown Avenue. Members of the task force arrested 28-year-old Jose Hernandez of 436 Middletown Avenue for numerous narcotics offenses, 3 outstanding warrants and for interfering with police. Also arrested was 22-year-old Gabriel Hernandez of 732 Quinnipiac Avenue for outstanding warrants. Approximately 48 grams of suspected crack cocaine were seized during this investigation. A search of the residence led to an additional seizure of approximately 27 grams of suspected powder cocaine, scales, cutting agents and packaging materials. “

Does anyone else think that the "drug bust" will only promote more shootings, as soon as the new coke salesmen start fighting over the newly vacated territory? Selling coke seems more profitable than any other economic activity in the neighborhood and, apparently, worth the risk of incarceration, getting shot, etc. The profits probably get recycled in the local economy - paying rent, buying food and clothes, etc. I guess that the neighborhood might be improved as a result of an unregulated business being shut down - it's not like the coke dealers are in the sludge trucking business, or emitting tons of toxic chemicals into the local air while getting tax breaks; what's next, temperance committees closing the local saloons? Even Cole Porter referenced coke, back in 1934, so it's not like the "drug war" has made any progress in the past seventy years.
