Goldfield Eyes Term 2

Carl Goldfield won a second term as Board of Aldermen president, vowing to encourage “creative” approaches to economic development and the brewing foreclosure crisis.
The aldermen voted unanimously to select Goldfield at their meeting Monday night. No one ran against him. It was a contrast to two years ago, when Goldfield accrued a bare majority in a contested race to defeat his opponent, Jorge Perez, 16-14.
Westville Alderman Sergio Rodriguez was unanimously elected to the board’s second top position, president pro tempore, Monday night.
“I want to see us be creative about making this a better place to live” over the next two years, Goldfield said after the meeting, when asked about his top priorities.
Specifically, he cited three main areas to which to apply that creativity:
Economic development. “This is going to be a tough budget year,” Goldfield. said. “So far the state has not been willing to ride to our rescue. The only means of alleviating the crushing burden on our taxpayers” is to lure new tax-paying businesses to the city.
Toward that end, Goldfield also endorsed an effort to incorporate “sustainability” and environmental consciousness into the board’s mission. The aldermen Monday night approved a proposal by Fair Haven Alderwoman Erin-Sturgis Pascale to add sustainability to the charge of the board’s Municipal Services Committee. Goldfield said that “making the city a more sustainable place to live, with good public transportation and support for people who want to bike, and improving our parks” all helps market New Haven to newcomers. “We have to sell ourselves differently: ‘You’re not living in the suburbs where to get a quart of milk [or go to work or a restaurant] you need to drive five miles.”
Goldfield has convened a working group on the board to explore ideas for helping families in danger of losing their homes. Foreclosures shot up 80 percent last year — and experts believe that’s only a hint of a bigger mortgage crisis to sweep the city and the nation in 2008. The rumor is that Goldfield's creativity may be referencing the Mayor's plan to resign in 2008 to be head of the Bank leaving Goldfield to be mayor for a year. This is intended to make him more electable for when his term would expire in 2009 (having had a year on the job). They also moved Rodriguez into the #2 slot on the BOA so he can become President Of The Board when everyone shuffles. Rodriguez resigned his job at Housing under federal investigation. Look for him in BOE in 2008. Which other BOA Alderpeople will get City jobs in 2008? Be creative and make your predicitions here.

Hey, how about cutting the budget and reducing costs.

I've got a solution to make public transportation and biking better in New Haven.
Ticket and tow the people who park in bus stops. It's amazing how much traffic gets backed up because buses can't actually stop in the bus stops. I certainly think a ticket / tow program would pay for itself in fines levied against the few bad apples who wreck the traffic flow for everybody.

Sorry Goldfield wrong answer, you have started out using the exact same approach you used since first being elected president. It hardly sounds creative or independent if your approach is to endorse the mayor's initiative announced during his inaugual speech last week.
It hardly sounds creative if you support Sergio Rodriquez for president pro- tempore, a deal you brokered over coffee last month.
Creative action is borne out of surrounding yourself with new people with fresh new ideas to improve the entire city and not just redeveloping downtown, yet again. Over the last twenty-five years taxpayers have sacrificed in allowing the city to rebuild downtown at least four times. The Mayor currently uses the argument that because downtown produces more that 50% of the taxes, it should received more dollars back. That argument bellies the fact that the "neighborhood city", during that time frame, supplied the tax money to build and re-build downtown.
Goldfield said that "making the city a more sustainable place to live, with good public transportation and support for people who want to bike, and improving our parks" all helps market New Haven to newcomers.
Again wrong answer,
Your statement here demonstrates your lack of vision and creativity; biking and parks are not the priority for moving New Haven ahead towards sustainability and improvement We should plan for our current citizens before we make the city more comfortable for newcomers..
Instead, you should begin by looking out-side the "administration box" and creatively towards involving citizens in your working group, who are eager to participate in a new road map towards making New Haven "a better place to live".

toomanytaxes hmmm not really sure is that is how town hall works. I think Goldfield may have an eye on the seat in the future. But is he next in line if Johnny steps down? I just don't see the Mayor leaving for that bank. Maybe a bigger political position. I still see Johnny the way he use to be... and do believe that he is and always will be involved in politics. Despite are dislikes for things that he has done to the middle class of the city... there is a plan. And I do see where he is going with it. But at times of hard ship nation wide I just don't see how we can move ahead and stick it to the middle guy.

Edsicle,
It may have to be Mayor John's dead body. We need to begin to focus now on a campaign to restore fiscal order and integrity to this city. We must begin to understand that the city government is not here to solve all the problems of the world. If the gov't did its job correctly, (i.e, educate our children so that they will be competitive in the marketplace), there will would be no need for the gov't to develop all of these programs, which cost us, the TAXPAYERS.
If nobody else is up to the challenge, then hell, I'll do it.
